In the news | UK supercharges fusion engineering with new doctoral training centre The UK is taking a bold step towards a sustainable energy future with the launch of a dedicated Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in fusion engineering. Starting in September 2025, this pioneering programme will equip the next generation of engineers with the expertise needed to advance fusion energy technology. Led by top UK universities – Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, and Liverpool – alongside the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA) Fusion Futures initiative, the CDT will train over 150 postgraduates to tackle the industry’s most pressing challenges. Professor Arunodaya Bhattacharya, Chair in Fusion Energy at the University of Birmingham and Fusion Engineering CDT Deputy Director, commented: “Fusion Engineering CDT students are the future of the fusion industry, stepping into a field where the challenges are unprecedented, and the opportunities are limitless." #fusionenergy #fusionengineering #fusion Image source: shutterstock/Efman

In the news | US scientists designing new satellite to hunt small space debris A groundbreaking project by a University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) scientist aims to revolutionise space debris detection. In a significant step towards safeguarding vital satellite infrastructure, researchers are developing a satellite capable of tracking debris as small as one centimetre, a feat currently beyond the reach of ground-based systems. UAF's Paul Bernhardt and University of Calgary researchers have developed a method to track space debris using plasma disturbances and wave analysis. The “Space Debris Hunter” satellite will detect debris using sensors and analyse frequency shifts to predict its path and enable collision avoidance, which is crucial as satellite numbers grow. #spacedebris #spacenews #spacetechnology *Image courtesy of Paul Bernhardt
