BREAKING: We are super excited to announce more details of our pioneering new development to support Bristol Children’s Hospital.
Thanks to funding from our incredible partners, Jingle Jam, we’ve now submitted a planning application to Bristol City Council to build a Patient Hotel, the first of its kind in the UK. This groundbreaking facility will be purpose-designed for children to stay with their families while they continue their therapy and rehabilitation on-site, or once they no longer require around-the-clock inpatient care in hospital.
This unique development sets the scene for a new generation of health provision for children and their families. It will also transform Bristol Children’s Hospital’s bed allocations by unlocking up to 24 vital beds at any one time, helping to reduce waiting times for surgery, accident or emergency admissions.
Every year, Bristol Children’s Hospital provides life-saving care and treatment to over 140,000 children from Bristol and all over the South West of England and South Wales. Many very sick babies and children spend weeks or months in hospital following accidents or traumatic incidents, or if they were born with a serious medical condition. But now, when they are ready to leave hospital after intensive treatment and care, children will be able to stay with their families and continue therapy and rehabilitation in The Grand Appeal’s new ‘home-from-home' Patient Hotel just minutes from the children’s hospital.
Our almost 30-year pioneering partnership with Bristol Children’s Hospital and Aardman has always been focused on what we can do to help the hospital pioneer care for critically ill and sick babies and children. The Patient Hotel is our next step on that journey, whilst setting a new standard for children’s healthcare in the UK following intensive care and treatment in hospital.
Martin Gargan, Clinical Chair at Bristol Children’s Hospital, is excited for the new developments. He said:
“The Grand Appeal’s new Patient Hotel will transform the care of our young patients. Children will be able to stay with their families, which will improve their wellbeing and reduce anxiety. Parents will play an active role in their child’s therapy, building confidence and helping to improve their child’s outcomes on discharge.”
We’ve appointed Bath-based Inspire Architects, led by our project lead Ray Tyner, to realise our vision for this project. The planning application is now lodged with Bristol City Council and we hope to release more details about the next phase, including details of the construction project and timetable for opening, later in the year.
