The Institute for Compound Semiconductors aims to position Cardiff as the European leader in compound semiconductors.
About us
Compound semiconductors (CS) are a vital part of our modern ‘connected’ world, as an enabling technology found in everything from smartphones, TVs and satellites to LEDs, lasers and solar panels. Cardiff University’s ERDF-funded Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS) offers commercial and academic researchers an avenue to pursue research, as well as product development and testing, without the huge upfront financial investment that would be required to purchase the necessary specialised equipment for such endeavours. The Institute is staffed by experienced process engineers and offers access to a wide range of equipment and services.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training Centre in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing aims to change the face of #CS research in the UK, by training the new generation to understand how to facilitate the translation of research into production. It has a unique and distinguishing feature – our students’ #PhDprojects are all co-designed with an industry partner, to solve a real world issues faced in that industry sector. We are now recruiting Cohort 6, and they will need projects upon which they can apply their considerable problem solving skills and the knowledge gained during their Masters degree in CS. If you work in CS #R&D and would like the opportunity to work with one of our brilliant students, see our website for details of how to submit a project, get in touch, or find out more by attending one of our briefing and networking days in Cardiff, on 16th July or 19th September, when you can also learn about the CS Hub for Sustainable Futures and the Place Based impact Accelerator Account and what they can do for you, and take a tour of the £80 million Institute for Compound Semiconductors facilities. To find out more and book your free place, email semiconductors-cdt@cardiff.ac.uk

Congratulations Kubos Semiconductors, great news.
Supporting the growth of the microelectronics / Compound Semiconductor cluster in Wales and promoting collaboration and investment opportunities.
A huge congratulations to Caroline O'Brien at Kubos Semiconductors for securing investment from the Development Bank of Wales and choosing the Welsh Semiconductor cluster. Kubos has been working on a new compound semiconductor material called cubic gallium nitride (#GaN) aimed at enabling next-generation microscopic scale, light-emitting diodes (#microLEDs), which find uses in small scale displays such as smartwatches and augmented or virtual reality devices. We are recruiting! New position in experimental semiconductor quantum technology, available from October 2024 for 3.5 years. You will work with us as part of the “Quantum Materials” (QuMAT) group at Cardiff University which already has a number of projects running in optics, quantum theory, and complimentary quantum science. Expect to learn experimental skills in the new lab, make samples in the Cardiff Cleanroom and be part of a growing and friendly team. The picture shows some micro-resonators we have recently made in aluminium nitride which enhances the quantum emission of single photon sources. Applicants from groups under-represented in STEMM are especially encouraged to apply. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/ehuNfA37 or contact BennettA19@cardiff.ac.uk.

It was our pleasure to host the UK Lithography Conference last week, welcoming many to the ICS for the first time, but great to see a few familiar faces too. Thanks to #Inseto for organising a great event - see you in Cambridge in 2026. https://lnkd.in/e3AxUqrF #Compound #Semiconductors #lithography #photolithography
We’d like to extend our thanks and express a resounding Thank You to all speakers that presented at the fully subscribed UK Lithography Conference - held on 17th April, sponsored by SUSS MicroTec and hosted by the Institute for Compound Semiconductors at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd. The event was a huge success. All presenters did a great job, explaining a variety of technical challenges and proffering solutions. If you were unable to attend the event and would like to receive an overview, we intend to write a report during the coming weeks. To register your interest in receiving a copy of the report please email us (enquiries@inseto.co.uk). UK government has today issued an Order allowing the acquisition of Newport Waferfab by Vishay Intertechnology of the UK. This brings to a close the uncertainty of the past two years caused by the original Divestment Order for the staff and their families dependent on the site. The announcement further strengthens the UK and Welsh offer, enabling Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. and the CSconnected and compound semiconductor cluster in Wales to plan for the future. #Wales #WalesInvested #CompoundSemiConductors #Power #Communications #Photonics #collaboration Eoghan O'Regan, Chris Meadows, Phillip White, Goro Okada, Laura Norris, Ivon van Heugten, Robin Walker https://lnkd.in/eNXxpRTs
