About us
The International Water Association (IWA) is a global organization that works with an interdisciplinary network of water professionals and partners to create a water wise world. Our experts collaborate and combine their knowledge to spread practical know-how throughout the entire water cycle to help us reduce, reuse, and replenish water resources. IWA is the global reference point for water professionals working in all aspects of the water cycle. Our network of around 10,000 members, and over 500 companies worldwide enables us to help water professionals deliver innovative, pragmatic and sustainable solutions to challenging global needs. Drawing on the over 75-year heritage of our original founders, we combine global expertise in research, practice, regulation, engineering, consulting, industry and manufacturing. In 1999, the International Water Services Association and the International Association of Water Quality joined forces to form the International Water Association (IWA), bringing the science and practice of water management closer together. Today, we are a strong and thriving global organisation that continues to deliver on our original vision.

IWA was pleased to participate in the latest Wet Networks innovation networking event hosted in London today by Arup and WRc Group. After an introduction by Arup’s Martin Shouler, IWA Executive Director Kala Vairavamoorthy chaired the event. Kala opened with words highlighting the need for a shift on innovation in the water sector, especially around low-carbon approaches and the opportunities for circular economy options and decentralisation. He cautioned about unintended consequences around efforts to improve efficiency, and noted the central importance of business models in ensuring the success of innovative solutions. Nick Mills, Director of Environment & Innovation at Southern Water, set the scene with a keynote, highlighting the many challenges faced by utilities in the sector, including climate change mitigation and adaptation needs, population growth, bathing water quality, flooding, and water scarcity. He outlined some of the responses his utility is implementing, including actions on sewer infiltration and supporting partnerships to implement sustainable urban drainage systems. Innovation pitches began with Alex Cropley, Head of Business Development and Partnerships at Low Carbon Materials (LCM), who presented options for water utilities to address embodied carbon - a recycled lightweight aggregate for use in concrete and a biogenic material for use in asphalt. Dayton Marchese, PE, Sales and Partnership Director at OptiRTC, presented his company’s continuous monitoring and adaptive control system for providing automated management across urban drainage networks, exploiting the use of available storage capacity, highlighted through work in Albany, NY, USA. Neel Shah, CEO and Co-founder of PuriFire Energy, shared details of the company’s technology for transforming wastewater into green fuels and green methanol. Using feedstock such as anaerobic digestion digestate, the technology applies ultra-superheated steam gasification with heat recovery as the core processing stage. Moletsane Mophethe, Co-Founder & CEO at Metal Morph, then presented his company’s technology which recycles spent metal-based drinking water coagulant, typically disposed of in landfill, recovering the coagulant and producing a metal-free waste. The event was rounded off by a special charity presentation by Will Birch of Supporting Wounded Veterans. SWV works across core elements to rehabilitate wounded veterans, including sports rehabilitation, mentoring, mental health resilience, its support network, and medical trials on post-traumatic stress disorder. In its work on occupation and employment, SWV has established its Rivers Forum, helping to get veterans into work on UK rivers in monitoring and at the same time creating a forum for river stakeholder exchanges.
