VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIES: Gabriela Voinescu I have been volunteering with Intervene twice a week for the past seven weeks. Despite having no prior legal work experience and not having completed the SQE/BPC, the skills I acquired during my time at Intervene, under the mentorship of Sana, the project manager, have enabled me to secure a paralegal position at a criminal defence firm. Throughout this experience, I gained invaluable insights into the internal complaint procedures for prisoners and developed essential skills for pursuing a career as a solicitor or barrister, including client handling, organisation, drafting, and maintaining a detail-oriented approach when reviewing case files. My responsibilities included answering phone calls from clients in prison, reviewing extensive case files, conducting legal research, drafting correspondence, and liaising with prisons, police stations, and hospitals. Not only was it an enriching experience, but it was also a lot of fun. The friendliness and warmth of everyone involved truly made it memorable. VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIES: Amy Talbot I joined Intervene in November 2024 and am currently undertaking my PGDL with the University of Law. Being quite new to the world of law, I wanted to gain some practical experience and an insight into the reality of being a lawyer. I chose to apply for the Intervene Project as I believed it to be somewhere I could make a real difference to the lives of others. Working here has already been a hugely rewarding experience - and I’ve only been here three weeks! Under the guidance of our brilliant Project Manager, Sana, I have developed my administrative legal skills and gained confidence in a new area of law. It is incredibly exciting and a real privilege to be assigned casework and know that you are actively making a difference to someone’s life. Even more rewarding is speaking to clients on the phone and hearing how much it means to them to have someone fighting their corner. Since working at the Intervene Project, I’ve found myself even more motivated to do well in my studies and I am hoping to secure a training contract in the New Year which will enable me to embark on a career as a solicitor. VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIES: Oskar Francis von Bülow Receiving a second chance is often a privilege that is overlooked. Here at the Intervene Project, we believe that many incarcerated people do not have access to even a first chance to get the support they need with pressing issues that affect their lives. Through the project, we provide avenues for supporting those who have exhausted their options. Ranging from property claims to human rights issues, the project helps its clients receive additional support that they would not have access to without the support of the charity. That is why I am dedicated to the project and eager to take on as many active cases as possible to ensure we can move forward and bring justice to not only existing clients but create capacity for prospective clients as well. I have had the opportunity to delve into the complexities of the justice system and work with talented individuals who aspire to bring justice to those in need. I highly recommend the project to anyone interested in completing meaningful work and diving into the intricacies of social justice pro bono work. VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIES: Madeleine McCourt: I have been volunteering with Intervene for four weeks and cannot speak highly enough of my experience here. I am an aspiring criminal barrister and the work at Intervene has set me up with invaluable skills for my dream career. At Intervene you learn quickly to find no problem too overwhelming, particularly with the support and guidance from our fantastic project manager, Sana. We are assigned our own casework, becoming familiar with the names of our clients and the details of their case. This gives volunteers a real, personal sense of making a difference as we get to see first-hand how a case develops and progresses out of our work. A typical day volunteering at Intervene involves writing, sending and receiving letters to and from our clients, prison governors, other prison staff and MPs. A case might require more evidence which our client can provide us or research into the law to see how we can best resolve a case. We also receive phone calls throughout the day from our clients in prison. It is so fulfilling to listen to their stories, concerns and anxieties and to be able to take active steps towards helping them and resolve their cases. I am currently completing a law conversion course and will be applying for pupillage in the New Year. My confidence in myself as a law student, pupillage candidate and future barrister has sky rocketed thanks to the opportunities Intervene has provided for me and it is a huge privilege to be a part of the work they do.
