Hyper-efficient and autonomous delivery network for rural areas #ClimateTech #Robotics #AutonomousLogistics

About us

IONA is developing hyper-efficient autonomous delivery networks combining drones and robotics for shipping companies losing hundreds of millions every year with last-mile, due to empty cargo bays, scattered delivery points, and driver shortages. We fight isolation - especially in rural communities - and mitigate 200Mt+ of CO2e emissions by avoiding the use of inefficient 3T trucks when they are running empty. We leverage a new regulatory framework and components off-the-shelf to provide a turnkey hardware-as-a-service solution that turns last-mile into the most profitable and well-serviced segment for logistics companies, with secondary markets in industrial and medical deliveries.

Why I don't think AI will kill us all? 🤖 And more broadly, why I'm mostly optimistic about tech. Being passionate about history and the thought processes that lead to decisions, it’s clear that “new fears” are rarely new. We are encoded to fear, and as humans we often overeact to it - which is less useful than when we were escaping wolves at night as hunter gatherers. Whether it’s scams, debates, or political controversies, the tools or look may change but human behaviour, fears, and bias remain. History does, in many ways, repeat itself. Ironically, my optimism about society stems from a place of anxiety. 😥 As a child (and even as I grew older), I often felt overwhelmed by society. This probably fuelled my love for extreme sports—testing limits became a way to channel my fears. After all, how can you worry about sharks when you're cycling through London? Statistically speaking, it doesn’t make sense (yes, I was a quirky kid!). Later, my thesis in economics, focused on waste management, was inspired by the Meadows Report. It pushed me to explore planetary boundaries and question whether "de-growth" was a viable solution. I wanted to understand the relationship between GDP and resources—a connection not governed by the laws of nature. The world once felt hostile, and my coping mechanism was observation and analysis. Over time, this honed my ability to read people, understand dynamics, and make sense of complex situations—skills that have been invaluable in startups and strategy. Yet, my biggest fear remains the unpredictability of irrational decisions by leaders. Connecting everything to patterns has its risks. Every pattern has its limits. This has become my new approach: I remain optimistic while critically evaluating variables and contexts. What worked in the past may not apply in the present. It’s a mindset that’s served me well in strategy and makes analysing politics and society endlessly fascinating. In short: if you share my curiosity, I highly recommend following Pessimists Archive. It’s a great reminder of our inherent human biases. https://lnkd.in/eTQ2EaGH #robotics #ai #innovation #startups #society #politics #news

I'm back after 3 weeks in the US: IONA became a US company 🗽🚀 We are growing fast and need ambitious backers to support this growth. It's great news overall, but worth explaining a bit more why. To succeed, we need available funding (public/private) coherent with what the competition will/might get and a supportive authority to co-develop what drone delivery should look like. 1) Business-oriented? Checked ✅ We found that with Ireland. 🍀 Regulations are amazing: they define the playground and create certainty. On that, Europe is rarely late: what's missing is what's coming next. If it takes 6 months to get a meeting with the right person for answers, start-ups can't iterate and it's also revelling on the lack of business acumen that the people in charge have. Investors will rightly perceive additional risks (certainty, international competition, etc.). Ireland is reactive and they understand that very well. We can have a chat with the Irish Aviation Authority or Enterprise Ireland overnight so that we co-develop what efficient and safe drone delivery looks like. 2) Funding? Well... ⚠️ "Not typical start-ups" in Europe are receiving next to nothing in terms of VC or Angel money, or for valuations that make deals too small and dilutive to compete. Our market is global so we must think about our competitors globally. Especially in London but all around Europe, ex-Bankers/Finance people started to be the decision makers for companies to receive VC funding and grants i.e. not curious people who can't develop opinions on technology. Instead, they try to apply pre-conceived "recipes" which isn't a good idea if the job is to find the next big thing. We waste €Billions+ sponsoring Lilium that was doomed from day 1, while Beyond Aero was doing YC - and therefore is incorporated in the US - even if the operations are in France. Of course, there are exceptions and we have been lucky to work with great UK/EU investors but the dynamic is not there and this is what is needed for a start-up to thrive. If we want to be the best, it's not compatible. Conclusion: by being in the US we access the largest and most insightful pool of investors for the next phases of growth, and we prepare a global expansion 😎 --- A big thanks to WeWork for sponsoring my influencer status with views like that (199 Water St, NY) - and Alexandra for the reco 😉

Today, IONA is officially 3 years old 🎂 So much has changed that it feels like a decade ago🫡 At that time, in 2021, while the startup market was going under I had the (brilliant) idea of starting a hardware-enabled and deeptech venture that needed a complex team to coordinate robotics, aero and logistics, and that required to change the mind of thousands because many were thinking about "drone delivery" in a very specific way that was not mine (e.g. coffee, military, medical... completely different business and tech). How do you start? Many ways can work, but mine was to rent the cheapest "student" accommodation in London i.e. a bedroom with one window on a brick wall that was also my office, kitchen, bathroom, dining room, etc. then step-by-step thinking about the problem, solution, market and everything else while connecting with as many people as possible to make it work. "Action creates information" Paul Graham. Very true! I was feeling awful and the first year was miserable, but it did what it was supposed to do: iterate. Over time, I started to understand the problem better than many people and the first teammates and stakeholders started to believe in my crazy idea because I was making progress day after day. One of the first was Iain Shirlaw and he kept me sane in many ways - because it was one of the early signs that maybe, I was not that crazy. It's not done! I know! This post does not pretend I made it, but only that I went from 0 to 0.1. Trust the process? We have a team of 10 now, drones flying after having proved the technology and we are developing the commercial product. It's still very much ahead, but I feel great because now I have what I need to show the world that my crazy idea was a very pragmatic one, just using a counterintuitive approach i.e. "flying can be cheaper and more sustainable". Thank you for everything - and to all those who believe in us, in our vision, and who sometimes followed this (painful?) journey to date: we will make you proud and we will use your trust to show them 😉❤️ Now, act II is about to start 🚀 Nikhil Conrad Saïf-Deen Om Sebastian Jonny Davide Ben Alex Matthew Tom Anthony Richard James Piotr Leon Arush Lorenzo Matt Harry Tangi Patrick Christos Steve Antonios Maxime Arnold Andrea Frank Ruth and many others!

Because we just discussed what's coming! 😎 IONA is expanding to Ireland, but not just anywhere: Future Mobility Ireland is welcoming us in Shannon, with a ready-to-use droneport perfectly located for our operations. Thanks, Russell and Wassim for your warm welcome and amazing work on innovation (and Casey for the pics). 🚀 Jonny and Etienne spent a few days in Ireland to officially launch our expansion there. It was the opportunity to meet face-to-face with great people from the AAM ecosystem, and despite a bit of rain, it's in Ireland that the horizon is crystal clear! 🍀 Thanks Bobby, Collins Aerospace, AirNav Ireland, Dogpatch Labs (David, Eoghan), Enterprise Ireland (Cillian), DAC Beachcroft (Majella), Business Post (Charlie), Wallace Corporate Counsel LLP, Technological University Dublin (Joseph), Irish Aviation Authority (Enda, Jim), The Shannon Airport Group (John) and many others.
