    With both Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth making loud noises Friday about Europe stepping up to the plate in spending more on its own defense, it might come as a surprise that Europe is already on the path toward far greater investment in defense, especially in tech. Not only has investment into “Defense, Resilience, and Security” (DSR) tech reached an all-time high of 10% of all VC funding in Europe, but the U.K. and NATO stepped up this week with the launch of the first NATO-approved cohort of startups under its Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) program, in partnership with the U.K.

    “Europe is falling behind. The funding strategy governments have taken has been like funding academic research. They’ve been spreading it around everywhere as opposed to being focused and decisive about where the money is being spent.” Mark Thompson ain’t wrong here. It’ll be hard for some to hear, but he’s right. Europe needs to shift its funding focus. It worries too much about allocating too little to too many. Focus is required. Governments need to become customers, and the private sector must be incentivized to become more active. “Partnerships between publicly-funded institutions and private companies — which can supply startups with huge amounts of capital and access to state-of-the-art facilities — are currently ‘much easier’ to secure outside of Europe.” European governments are far too focused on grants and subsidies, and not enough on being buyers of first resort. That’s a major mindset change that needs to happen if Europe is to have any chance at commercializing its science and research. 🔬 https://lnkd.in/eMu5rwc5
