Nu Quantum has demonstrated for the first time that modular quantum computing systems are not just practically feasible, but also an efficient way to scale quantum systems with near-term quantum processing units. This work is paving the way to significantly shortening the timeline to useful quantum computers by scaling out with a networked architecture. See the full post below ⬇️
The question of when we will have useful quantum computers is always at the forefront of our industry. The paper released today by Nu Quantum moves up that timeline significantly. Today we released a Distributed Quantum Error Correction (QEC) theory paper demonstrating how a modular quantum computing architecture of interconnected processors is compatible with high-rate and efficient quantum error correction codes, charting a path towards fault-tolerant distributed quantum computing. This theory work has three significant implications: ❇️Distributed-QEC of modular quantum computing systems is possible ❇️The network requirements for an error-corrected distributed system are feasible ❇️Distributed-QEC is at least as efficient as other Monolithic QEC strategies The paper charts a path to build a modular system architecture where many relatively small QPU cores (~100 qubits) are connected via a sparse network with realistic interconnect performance to efficiently create an arbitrarily large fault-tolerant machine. This work complements other recent breakthroughs in QEC, with Google’s Willow chip pushing the quality of logical qubits, QuEra Computing Inc. and Quantinuum advancing the quantity of logical qubits in a single processor, and Nu Quantum now demonstrating a path towards distributed quantum error correction. This important theory work both informs and underwrites Nu Quantum’s initiatives and capabilities to deliver efficient interfaces to leading qubit modalities via Qubit Photon Interface(s) and of scalable Quantum Networking Units capable of instantiating the complex entanglement graphs necessary for the implementation of Distributed-QEC codes described. Great to see Molyon CEO Ismail Sami profiled as part of the Founders at the University of Cambridge programme!
With only weeks to go until START 2.0 begins, we're shining a light on the success stories from our START 1.0 cohort. First up, Molyon, who is producing the next-generation energy storage solution: the lithium-sulfur battery. Having completed the 2024 accelerator, the team has recently gone on to raise $4.6 million in seed funding led by IQ Capital and Plural, with participation from Cambridge Enterprise, Parkwalk Advisors, and Angel Investors to expand the core team of battery engineers, material scientists and operations staff. Founded in the University of Cambridge's Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy by CEO Dr Ismail Sami, Enterprise Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Hub and Entrepreneurial Fellow at The Faraday Institution; CTO Dr Zhuangnan Li; Commercial Advisor Dr Sai Shivareddy; and Scientific Officer Professor Manish Chhowalla, Molyon's new battery chemistry provides superior performance at a lower cost. 🎥 👇🏼 | Hear how they are revolutionising the Li-S battery field from Dr Ismail Sami. #NetZeroEnergy #BatteryTech #FoundersSTART #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #Cambridge

Delighted to welcome Molyon to the IQ Capital portfolio, co-leading their first funding round with Plural! Ismail Sami, Zhuangnan, and Prof. Chhowalla's breakthrough cathode technology allows sulphur to remain stable and provide high energy density over hundreds of cycles—revolutionising the lithium-sulphur battery field. This is based on 15 years of materials science research in the Chhowalla Group at the University of Cambridge and enables lithium-sulphur batteries to be designed and scaled safely. With demonstrated pouch cell energy density of 500 Wh/kg — over 2x typical Li+ — Molyon will unlock battery markets in drones, robotics, EVs, and storage, and they’re just getting started on performance. Further, Molyon's batteries use readily available and environmentally friendly materials, breaking the Li+ dependence on rare earth metals including nickel, manganese, and cobalt. It’s been fantastic to see the speed this team operates at during their progression out of the lab, and it's a pleasure to continue working with Sai Shivareddy. We are thrilled to announce our investment in Trogenix as they emerge from stealth! Trogenix has developed a novel approach to tackle difficult-to-treat cancers, including glioblastoma, liver, lung, and colorectal cancers, with their Synthetic Super-Enhancer (SSE) platform, Odysseus. Their preclinical research demonstrates potential to selectively target aggressive cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. It has been a pleasure to work with Steve Pollard, Ken Macnamara, and the Trogenix team on their journey so far, and we’re excited to support them as they develop this ambitious platform. Congratulations to the entire team - this is just the beginning! Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ePrWj3wt

Outstanding progress in bringing quantum sensing to the global semiconductor industry. Congratulations to Kevin Berghoff, Fleming Bruckmaier, and the whole team at QuantumDiamonds on the launch of their first product.
QuantumDiamonds Launches the World’s First Commercial Quantum Device for Semiconductor Failure Analysis 💎 We are proud to announce the launch of QD m.0—the world’s first commercial quantum sensing device designed for semiconductor failure analysis! This advanced system utilizes diamond-based quantum microscopy to deliver unprecedented precision in detecting and localizing faults in integrated circuits, meeting the increasing testing demands of 2.5D/3D chip stacks, advanced packaging, and heterogeneous integration in modern semiconductor fabrication. The launch event, held last Thursday, kicked off with an inspiring speech by Bavaria’s Minister of Digital Affairs, Dr. Fabian Mehring, followed by an engaging presentation from our CEO, Kevin Berghoff, and CTO, Fleming Bruckmaier, who shared QuantumDiamonds' journey over the past two years, unveiled the device, and talked about future plans. The event continued with a lively panel discussion moderated by Bartu Bisgin, our founders' associate: our panelists—Philipp Gerbert (CEO, TUM Venture Labs), Benedikt Kläs (Investment Manager, Zeiss), Axel Fischer (Former VP and GM, Samsung Semi Europe), and Inga vom Holtz (Investment Director, UnternehmerTUM)—shared their insights on Europe's strategic role in semiconductor manufacturing. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this milestone a success, including our investors, partners, esteemed guests, and the incredible QuantumDiamonds team—a special thanks to Mey Maschinenbau, our strategic manufacturing partner. This launch marks a new chapter for QuantumDiamonds, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds! 💎 Want to learn more about the QD m.0?
