The power demands of #AI are now forcing #datacenter operators to find energy sources anywhere they can – including, it turns out, at the site of the worst nuclear disaster in US history. In Bloomberg News, Will Wade and Dina Bass report that the nuclear #power plant at Three Mile Island may soon go back into commission to supply electricity to data centers. It’s an example of just how much energy data centers and AI require, and why we need #compoundsemiconductors like #GaN to mitigate those power demands with its increased efficiency, as well as #indiumphosphide (InP) and #siliconphotonics to handle the faster data processing needs of #generativeAI and the increased #interconnections needed in these growing data centers. It was a fascinating few days at the Techblick MicroLED Connect conference at the Hi Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Many thanks to Ron Mertens Chris Clare and the team for inviting us, IQE, to provide the opening Masterclass talk on 200mm microLED wafer epitaxy. To summarise the show in a short post I would say we have seen a revitalised sector focused on solving the key challenges to getting microLEDs into mainstream applications. There is a clear understanding of the application segments and requirements of the markets. A concensus seemed to be that AR/VR and automotive applications provided the most compelling early stage opportunities for high volume use cases of microLEDs. Pivotal, at the centre of the challenges is mass transfer of chips from the processed epitaxial wafer to a suitable backplane. At the heart of the required improvements to ensure future success are low defectivity, low bow, uniform microLED epitaxial wafers in red, green and blue that are suitable for efficient operation at small mesa sizes. Could space be the next frontier for data centers? In a new article in InformationWeek, Carrie Pallardy reports on a new study funded by the European Commission that found putting #datacenters in #space - in orbit around the Earth, or locating them on the Moon, could be a solution to their increasing #energy and square footage demands. While it is an interesting idea, data centers in space are still years away due to cost and logistical issues, so for now, we must look for ways to make them more #sustainable here on Earth. One way to do that is with materials like #GaN. With its higher efficiency and switching speeds, studies have shown GaN can help reduce CO2 emissions in data centers by 100 metric per year, while also increasing their performance and lowering costs. Applications such as #GenAI are increasing data interconnect and energy demands within #datacentres. To support requirements for improved transceiver optimised performance, IQE is launching a Quantum Dot Laser (QDL) foundry growth service, available at wafer diameters up to 300 mm, for evaluation in #siliconphotonics platforms which enable faster, more efficient photonic circuits to be created. #QDLs are being developed to address industry requirements for higher-speed, low-latency, and more energy-efficient optical interconnects, which are needed to handle the increasing demands of #AI workloads. By reducing both the energy footprint and operational costs, while allowing for expansion, QDLs play a crucial role in ensuring that data centres can meet the future demands of AI in a sustainable manner.
