We’re incredibly proud of our Founder, Amanda Bronkhorst, who was recently honoured as a shortlisted finalist at the GDST (The Girls' Day School Trust) Festive Drinks and Alumna of the Year Award. With 50 nominations and nearly 3,000 votes cast, this recognition celebrates Amanda’s incredible work tackling climate change - or, as GDST described it, being a "change maker." The evening was a celebration of inspirational women and their remarkable achievements, including award winners like Felicity Baker, a Senior Producer at the BBC who is raising awareness about stammering, and 'Trailblazer' Maleha Khan, who learned to fly at just 15, joined the RAF, and now works as an aerospace professional at the UK Space Agency. The main takeaway? There is no boundary or limit to what women can achieve. Only 24% of SMEs recognise the financial benefits of sustainability. This stat could feel disheartening, but it’s actually a reason for hope. Imagine when we’ve flipped that number around. It reminds us of the deforestation we’ve witnessed in places like Peru—heartbreaking, yes, but also an opportunity to make a real difference. If this was the state after we’d done everything we could, it would be much more worrying. But the reality is, there’s so much we can still do. At JUST ONE Tree, we’re seeing more and more companies and schools take action every day to heal the planet and shape a sustainable future. And with 5.5 million SMEs out there, the impact we could collectively have if we flipped that 24% is immense. While there’s frustration in seeing fossil fuels still on the table, the rise of renewable energy gives us hope. Lower costs and greater energy security are driving real transformation. We’re also eagerly awaiting the findings of the UK government’s review into the economic benefits of sustainability for SMEs, due in May (https://lnkd.in/es_NiTVc). This could be a turning point in helping businesses realise that sustainability isn’t just “costing the earth”—it’s a smart business decision. Today, our founder, Amanda Bronkhorst, headed off bright and early to The Compton School in Friern Barnet to speak at the London Borough of Barnet's Secondary School Headteachers’ Conference. After her well-received talk at the Primary School Headteachers’ Conference, the council invited Amanda back to discuss climate change, the urgency of action, and how schools can actively participate in repairing our planet. In a world where the headlines can feel overwhelming, today’s talk is a reminder of the action that's happening on the ground - and that it really matters. Scenes like those from Valencia highlight that climate change is on our doorstep, making it more important than ever to take meaningful steps. With nearly half of Barnet’s schools already participating in JUST ONE Tree Day, we hope today’s talk will inspire even more secondary schools to join us in creating a greener future. Amanda’s confidence in front of crowds continues to grow after so many talks in recent months.
