Prototype samples – your path to better products We understand the importance of physical samples during the phases of product development. Prototype parts are necessary to prove out designs and functionality of systems. Because of this, in 2017 we decided to open a dedicated Product Development Centre to support our customers with sample parts for multiple different applications. Our Product Development Centre is manned by skilled engineers who have years of experience in producing prototype parts as near to production standard as possible. To achieve a high quality of part, we have installed production quality equipment and processes into the Product Development Centre, including a state-of-the-art multi-stack BLM GROUP Smart CNC bending machine for metal pipes, and our world’s first CNC bending machine for nylon tubes. We have also invested in end forming, drilling, welding, brazing and validation testing processes to ensure that only the highest quality prototype parts are sent to our customers. As well as producing a wide range of Fluid and Air Transfer pipes, we also specialise in the production of tube based Structural Assemblies that provide critical strength and integrity to vehicles and machines, these assemblies include Cross Car Beams. Cross Car Beams are the backbone of dashboard modules, and their production requires high strength steel tubes and brackets with very tight tolerances. Lander's manufacturing process involves robotic welding on bespoke welding fixtures, followed by a camera checking system that ensures all components are in place and all welds meet the correct specifications. Only when the part has been passed as good quality will the label be printed, and then it can be scanned into the shipping stillage. The internal cleanliness of tubes are vital for the working efficiency of certain propulsion systems, including turbochargers. Debris inside a tube from the production process can cause blockages to a system and mean that it works inefficiently or even worse, it could stop working all together. This is why there are higher levels of cleanliness applied to the designs of pipes in certain applications. For example, Turbo Feed Pipes can have internal cleanliness specifications of down to 250 microns for metallic and non-metallic particles. Component features such as banjo fittings, which are commonly used on Turbo Feed Pipes, can restrict the flow of fluid through the tubes. When a part uses banjo fittings we typically see cleanliness requirements of around 400 microns for metallic and non-metallic particles. To achieve these levels of cleanliness, Lander has installed an in-house clean room. This clean environment is where we assemble parts before they are flushed through with mineral oil at pressure to completely clean the internal bore of the tubes.
