About us

Electronics and Electrical Engineering department supported, student run group focused on research in space based engineering. Currently focusing on competing in the UKSEDS Rocketry competition and working on a payload to be launched on a CubeSat. The end aim of our society is to develop, build and manage the construction of a CubeSat (or any variations of such a small scale satellite). This is to be done through graded university project work relating to LASER, that are already essential to the student’s EEE related degree. The integral objective of this group is to promote and maintain interest in the EEE field of study for graduating college students. We want to create a friendly and social atmosphere where students can not only develop their engineering and management skills, but also gain important industrial skills that students don’t tend to learn during their time in University.

Our Rocket Team, Unity Rise; led by Natasha Cooper have outdone themselves and won the ‘Best Airframe’ award at the UKSEDS - UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space National Rocketry Championship 2023-24. It was our pleasure to represent the University of Liverpool at the rocketry championship and we are going to continue building rockets for the foreseeable future. We launched our first rocket! On Wednesday the 12th of June 2024, at the UKSEDS - UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space National Rocketry Championship. Our rocket team 'Unity Rise' launched the 'Banana Split Rocket', the University of Liverpool's first rocket launch. We are so proud of our team members Karl King, Natasha Cooper for designing, constructing and launching the rocket! This week, together with Jacobs colleagues, I had the pleasure of hosting students from the University of Liverpool LASER - Liverpool Association for Space Engineering Research Association at our Birchwood campus. During the event, students had the opportunity to tour our laboratories, network with valuable contacts who are working in the Nuclear, Robotics and Space sectors, and explore our Virtual Reality suite, learning about ways we can make the world smarter, more connected and more sustainable. At Jacobs we understand the benefit of high-quality knowledge exchange and we valued the chance to both reflect on our own experiences within industry, and to learn from others and hear their stories. A big thank you to Rachael Cassidy for organising a great day, and to Ahmed Al-Irhayim and Conor Lambe for bringing such engaged and interesting students. We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Jack James Marlow, the head of engineering at Skyrora Ltd to host a talk and discussion on "How to run a rocket company", Skyrora's current aims, and the difficulty of space technology and engineering. It was a privilege to host him at The University of Liverpool, at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics. The session concluded with a very interesting Q&A and 'meet and greet'. We hope this has inspired students to pursue and explore an interest in the space/rocket industry.
