Some great press this morning about our newly completed Poundland project in Elgin. It was a really special project with some unique challenges, all made possible by a brilliant and committed team including Torrance Partnership LLP, Narro, cdmm (UK) Ltd, Safehands Health and Safety Consultants Ltd, HIGHLAND TEMPORARY WORKS LIMITED, Caintech Ltd, SPEYSIDE SCAFFOLDING SERVICES LTD., Morgan Sindall Construction, DAVID SMITH CONTRACTORS LTD. , DARROCH & ALLAN (JOINERS & BUILDERS) LIMITED and TREMLETT AND TURNER LIMITED with the support of Moray Council. A fascinating project, and a fantastic client in Poundland & Dealz who's unwavering commitment to our local community is highly commendable – we are looking forward to sharing more of our stories from the six year journey ! We recently had a fascinating visit to Ballantine's iron foundry in Bo'ness, to check out some work in progress for some of our projects. Started in the 1820's they are one of only a small number of iron foundries left in the UK, marking another one of the traditional skills and processes that are at sadly risk of depletion across the construction industry. Gavin kindly showed us around their amazingly productive site, absolutely seeping with history and connections to so many familiar architectural features and sites. Understanding more about the process and workmanship behind the things we design and specify is essential, and it is such a pleasure to work with skilled craftspeople with a passion for what they do.

A particularly exciting site start for us at St Michael le Belfrey in York after 5 years of working with the Grade I listed building to get to this stage. The interior of the church has been filled with scaffold so we said goodbye to the internal views temporarily - and the specialist contractors have begun in earnest across the building. Keep an eye out for updates as we progress! A few of us attended the RIAS Conservation Seminar this week, at Historic Environment Scotland's Engine Shed in Stirling. So many brilliant talks over the course of the afternoon, and an hour session at the start for anyone considering Conservation Accreditation to come along and ask questions. It was great to have the event in person again, allowing colleagues from across Scotland come together and cover such a broad range of heritage focused topics.
Had a great afternoon on Tuesday at the RIAS Conservation Seminar held at the Engine Shed in Stirling. Lots of really interesting talks, particularly enjoyed hearing from Chris & Carl at Collective Architecture on their work on tower block retrofits. My first Edinburgh flat was on Henderson Gardens in Leith, the small block of tenements that are hugged by the bent shape of the banana flats. It's so encouraging to see the rigorous approach being taken to retrofit in a way that respects the original building, but that puts comfort and occupants at the heart of the proposal. The talk from Lindsay at the Stirling City Heritage Trust on their brilliant Traditional Buildings Health Check was also very inspiring. It would be great to see this model expanded across other Scottish cities, helping protect the many underrated buildings that are so essential to the fabric of our streets.

The LDN team recently had the pleasure of visiting the Laurence McIntosh Joinery Workshop in Edinburgh for a guided tour of their state-of-the-art facility. The Laurence McIntosh team are long-time LDN collaborators who strive to uphold the finest traditions of craftsmanship and joinery whilst embracing modern day innovation. Working with skilled artisans is vital to our work at LDN and seeing their passion for detail and dedication to traditional techniques firsthand was truly inspiring. A big thank you to the team at Laurence McIntosh for their warm hospitality and for showing us around!
