Simpson & Brown is a multi-disciplinary practice specialising in Architecture, Archaeology and Heritage Consultancy.

About us

Founded in 1977 as an architectural practice, Simpson & Brown has evolved into a multi-disciplinary firm which now also offers archaeological, architectural history, heritage consultancy and master planning services. During this time the practice has not only been responsible for conserving some of the United Kingdom’s most important historic structures but has also developed a growing reputation for the design of award-winning contemporary buildings. Our aim is to improve the quality of the built environment through scholarly conservation work and well-mannered contextual design that is true to its time and place. Whilst respecting and acknowledging the past, our architecture strives to respond to the challenges of the future, particularly with regard to sustainable design. Simpson & Brown also operate an archaeological division – Addyman Archaeology – which has extensive experience and expertise in constructional and field work, historic building analysis and specialist survey techniques. Both Simpson & Brown and Addyman Archaeology are supported by a dedicated architectural history team which specialises in research and historic building consultancy work, including the preparation of conservation plans and heritage assessments. The practice has also considerable experience in preparing feasibility studies, options appraisals, funding application, condition assessments, legal and expert witness reports, and master plans. Simpson & Brown, with Addyman Archaeology, is a medium-sized practice of five partners and 30 staff. From its principal office Edinburgh, it operates throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. The firm as a whole is committed to quality, good management, continuing professional development and, above all, the interests of its clients.

Simpson & Brown’s Heritage Consultancy Team, Christian Clarkson, Esmé Coppock, Laure Emery, Lena Sideri and Nicholas Uglow, are delighted to have been awarded the SAHGB-IHBC Heritage Research Award 2024 for their conservation management plan for Dalkeith Palace. The judging panel was hugely impressed by the accomplished research into the important but little-studied Scottish Baroque building presented in a highly compelling narrative which traces the architectural changes to the A-listed mansion house. They commented that "the research makes excellent use of a wealth of documentary material in the estate archives and very clear phase plans to show the various changes. It will be indispensable to the client, the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust." This is the second time the outstanding work of the Heritage Consultancy Team has been recognised, having received the same award in 2022 for their research on the former Royal High School, Edinburgh.

  • Simpson & Brown have been appointed to carry out a quinquennial survey of the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney. Our appointment involves detailed reporting on the site’s current condition with recommendations for the repair and future care of the Cathedral. Archilink Measured Surveys have produced a full laser scan measured survey of the building which will be an invaluable tool to use going forward. #simpsonandbrown #orkneyislandscouncil #Archilink

  • Scott is spotted in Newcastle Cathedral clock. An adventurous day discovering all sorts of hidden corners and spaces during a quinquennial inspection of Newcastle Cathedral. Here, Scott has crawled through a tunnel in a wall of the cathedral tower and popped out in a tiny space between the tower wall and the clock face @newcastlecathedral

The annual SPAB-STBA conference took place in the Hospitium in York yesterday. Simpson & Brown spoke about our work at Dalmeny House where our architects, archaeologists and heritage consultants have been working closely with NARRO on a major stabilisation project to replace the failing timber foundations. With the conference theme of ‘New Ideas for Old Buildings’ we were delighted to be able host the evening reception at the nearby York Art Gallery, a project that demonstrates how historic buildings can be creatively adapted to meet modern requirements. The building is currently hosting an exhibition of William Morris’s work - Morris was famously a co-founder of SPAB in 1877. It was wonderful to see current SPAB fellows and delegates enjoy Morris’s work within the new  galleries that we completed in 2015. Many thanks to SPAB, STBA and York Museums Trust.
