The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE) has announced the appointment of Steve Foxley to be its new Chief Executive, following an extensive recruitment process led by its Board. Foxley is currently the CEO of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield, part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, having previously been a member of the Executive Management Board of Siemens plc leading its Building Technologies Division. ORE said he is set to take up the post in early 2025. He replaces Andrew Jamieson, who stepped down earlier this year after over ten years at the helm. Commenting on his new position, Foxley said: “Offshore wind is a sector that has long held my fascination for its capacity to regenerate forgotten communities; to provide green energy to homes and businesses; to push the boundaries of innovation, and to make industrial scale impact globally. “I am very much looking forward to joining the team at ORE Catapult to support this critical sector and to deliver on the country‘s ambitions." UK car manufacturing output fell by 15.3 per cent in October, the eighth consecutive month of decline, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The findings state that 77,484 car units left factory gates – 14,037 fewer than in the same month last year – with plants continuing their retooling to enable production of the next generation of zero emission vehicles. 24,719 battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid electric cars were made, representing almost a third (31.9 per cent) of output, despite a volume decline of -32.6 per cent. Since January, UK car makers have now turned out a combined 239,773 electrified vehicles, with 71.8 per cent of them exported to global markets. The UK’s manufacturers are at risk of missing out on innovation and productivity gains due to a lack of confidence in digital technologies and AI, according to a Make UK report published in collaboration with Autodesk. The 'Future Factories powered by AI' report examines the opportunities and challenges for UK manufacturers and proposes how Government initiatives and regulation can support the sectors adoption of new technologies. It shows that manufacturers are using AI tools widely across their business, in particular to manage energy use and reduce waste. Yet, despite increased adoption, only 16 per cent claim to be ‘knowledgeable’ about AI’s potential uses. The lack of understanding and confidence in AI’s applications means only a third (36 per cent) of companies are using it in their manufacturing operations, with Make UK warning of significant implications for the UK’s efforts to improve productivity. A global wire supplier is looking to showcase the benefits of a £200,000 investment drive in three dry drawing machines at Valve World next month. Alloy Wire International (AWI) is set to explore new opportunities in oil and gas when it showcases its 62-strong range of exotic alloys in Dusseldorf (Hall 1 Stand C1) on December 3rd-5th, 2024. The recent installation of new machinery - ideal for producing the heat and corrosion resistant wire demanded by customers - will give it extra capacity and ensure that it can continue to meet three-week lead times that are proving so popular, the company said. 🖥️ Software company SprutCAM has rebranded to ENCY Software and as part of this move, it has launched a new CAD/CAM/OLP system that aims to be different to other providers in the market. MACHINERY spoke with Andrey Kharatsidi, CEO of Ency Software, to find out more. "The production IT market has arguably been a bit predictable for many years with the big players dominating, but now, SprutCAM, a Cyprus-based software provider has rebranded to Ency Software and has launched a new CAD/CAM/OLP system designed to transform manufacturing processes. "Ency Software was previously called SprutCAM and first established more than 30 years ago by the father of current chief executive officer Andrei Kharatsidi. He fondly remembers when he was a child and his father was sitting at night after night pouring over tool paths and developing the software. "A driving force behind the rebrand and development, was because Kharatsidi believes the market has not evolved in decades with interfaces stuck in the last century, with fragmented tools struggling to communicate with one another and no major changes having been made to software in the last five to 10 years. "His belief is that CAD/CAM software no longer meets the demands of modern production with most too focused on the technology, but he is sure that Ency Software will 'bring something different' to the market that is currently not available." Additional tax measures announced in the recent Budget could help trigger a wave of spending in automation and outsourcing, according to PP Control & Automation. Tony Hague, CEO of West Midlands-based PP Control & Automation (PP C&A), expects the £25bn annual rise in employers’ National Insurance Contributions (NICs) to test the resilience of manufacturing even further, with companies pivoting strategies to grapple with high operational expenses and widespread skills shortages. He believes many companies will instead turn to investing in new technology and partnering with manufacturing specialists for non-core competences to alleviate immediate financial pressures whilst also building foundations for sustainable growth. “Our sector is highly sensitive to changes in employment costs, given its dependence on a diverse, skilled workforce. NICs, representing a significant portion of employers’ expenses, directly impact our operational expenditure (OpEx),” explained Hague, who has overseen PP C&A’s rise to a £36m business. “Automation and strategic outsourcing can give management teams some comfort if they can look past the initial investment and instead look at it through the joint lens of long-term productivity and efficiency gains. Automating repetitive, high-labour tasks can lead to substantial savings, including NICs, wages, and training investments, whilst also freeing up team members to take on higher value tasks."
