Despite some dips in the good weather we had been having, we have been able to get the works underway at Worthing Pier, and the team has made great progress so far. Six 15m steel piles have been driven into the seabed, either side of the pier, further strengthened by capping and bracing. Steel support beams and 16.5m steel trusses on top will take the weight of the pier and enable the removal of the damaged piles and subsequent replacement. The team has been working all hours of the days, nights and weekends, whenever the tide and weather has allowed and will continue to do so until we can get the pier open again. It is an excellent example of Mackley’s emergency call out response and skilful engineering. Installation of the new fendered turning plate at Newhaven has now been completed by Mackley. Local residents have likened the end result to a giant living Rothko painting that they suggest might attract international art lovers to Newhaven!

Havant Thicket Reservoir – The Directors Cut Post 8 – Cathedral It’s not a cathedral, obviously, it is the trial section of our main culvert through which water is taken from the reservoir, but I found myself looking up with similar wonder at the scale and intricacy of the falsework (temporary supports) and shuttering (mould) needed for its construction. In post 6, I explained why and how the culvert functions and why we have built this trial which, now complete, has provided some essential learning. We have identified ways that the falsework system for the shuttering can be erected and then moved along to build the adjacent section more efficiently. There will be around 20 sections in total. The real culvert has the additional challenge of only being accessible from one free end so we had to make sure we planned for that restriction. Pouring and compacting concrete in between curved shutters was always going to be a challenge, especially on the outside surface where gravity is against us. We have had good results but have had to bear in mind that the trial length is only 3 metres long and the real sections will be 12 metres long making this even more challenging. As a result of the trial we have adapted our compaction strategy to include direct vibration of the shutters (which compacts the concrete and removes air) and ‘letter boxes’ in the shutters to allow access for further compaction and inspection as we go. We have also learned a lot about our preferred concrete mix, curing times and temperatures, installing the water seal at each joint between sections and building the culvert safely. I would like to say thank you and well done to our team who have worked diligently and with determination to get this right and learn as much as we can. They tell me they have enjoyed the experience which is great to hear and this gives us the encouragement to move onto the real thing.

🚧 Project Spotlight: Tower Wharf Jetty Replacement Originally built in the 1950s, the Seacon jetty on the Thames had reached the end of its design life and needed a major upgrade. This vital facility supports shipments of neo-bulk cargo like steel, metals, and timber—meaning our team had to keep operations running smoothly throughout. Our work included: 🔹 Diverting services beneath the new ramp footprint 🔹 Installing 36m tube piles to support the new jetty structure 🔹 Building a bulk-fill access ramp connecting the jetty to access roads 🔹 Fitting pre-cast deck units and finishing with tarmac surfacing 🔹 Complex excavation behind the river wall With strict constraints, like timing our piling to protect migratory fish and ensuring the neighbouring jetty stayed open, our team completed this project with precision and care. This #NationalEngineeringDay 2024, we visited TeenTech in Sussex to challenge students from across the region to think about the incredible engineering required to protect our coastline from waves and weather. Using our very own wave tank and ‘Brighton Beach’ setting, we asked students to choose from a selection of flood defences and to test them in the tank. The aim was for the group to decide which engineered approach was the most effective, balancing that with the needs of the setting. Students got stuck in, asking lots of questions about the advantages and disadvantages of hard and soft engineering and our team were on hand to answer even the trickiest of questions. Each session produced lively debate and lots of creative thinking. The Royal Academy of Engineering say that ‘for a new, more diverse generation to aspire to join our brilliant profession, research tells us that they need role models who inspire and excite them about the possibilities of engineering’. Hopefully we inspired the students we met today – they certainly inspired us with their enthusiasm and ideas. #NationalEngineeringDay #EngineeringRoleModels #teentechsussex
