LAUNCHED TODAY: A Guide to Best Practice – Catch & Release
Today marks the opening of the fishing season on several Scottish rivers, including the Tweed, Dee, and Forth – many more open later in February. As anglers return to the water, it’s more important than ever to protect Scotland’s iconic wild Atlantic salmon.
These fish are facing growing pressures from climate change, habitat loss, and other environmental threats. But Scotland’s anglers are leading the way—over 95% of wild salmon are released, making our approach to catch and release one of the most responsible in the world.
By refining our techniques, we can ensure even greater success. A salmon’s survival chances decrease if it’s played for too long, exposed to air, or mishandled. The good news? Small changes make a big difference.
By following best practice guidelines, we can achieve near 100% survival rates—giving released salmon the best possible chance to spawn and sustain future generations.
In light of new evidence, Fisheries Management Scotland—working as a delivery partner of the Wild Salmon Strategy—has led the development of updated Catch & Release Best Practice guidance. This guide addresses key stress factors such as:
✅ Fish handling & air exposure
✅ Water temperature & when to fish
✅ Biosecurity risks & preventing disease spread
✅ Best practices for fish weighing & photography
This new guidance provides practical, evidence-backed advice to help anglers maximise salmon survival and protect Scotland’s iconic fish for future generations.
