Last week Marsden’s Karen Glass chaired a fully-subscribed event with General Counsel and Chief Legal Officers to discuss the relationship between Boards and General Counsel, offering advice for transitioning wishing to transition into NED roles. Organised by Winmark and hosted by Cooley LLP in London, the panel featured Erica Handling, Andrew Ballheimer, and Dame Janet Gaymer, who shared insights from their successful journeys into NED portfolios. Despite perceptions that lawyers aren’t natural choices for Boards, these leaders demonstrated the unique value lawyers can bring. Key takeaways included practical tips on securing NED roles and leveraging lawyers’ strengths in Board settings. A full report will follow, but attached are some initial thoughts. If you are a General Counsel/Head of Legal considering the NED route, Marsden’s Karen Glass, Sarita Rai, Kate Bramwell, Amanda Chard, Liam Richardson (London), Angela Floydd (Europe) and Aaron Faith and Matthew Oakey (Middle East) are here to help and advise. If a firm has lost a partner—or a number of partners—this does not necessarily mean that the firm is in trouble. It may well be that the firm is making changes which do not suit some partners - but could suit you. If partners are leaving, it's a chance for the firm to promote internally, or to recruit laterally. Partners leave firms for all sorts of reasons - and not always negative. There are pull as well as push factors. Sometimes groups of partners leave at the same time but the departures are unconnected. For partners looking to make a lateral move, or for lawyers looking for a vertical move into a partnership position, or to position themselves better for partnership, change at a firm could be a great opportunity. At Marsden we speak to partners and law firm leadership every day and know where these opportunities lie. The impact that AI has had on the legal sector is undeniable. Bloomberg’s 2024 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 survey reported that half of respondents at law firms say their workplace has a practice group —or at least an internal team—dedicated to understanding AI. As a precursor to our upcoming event with Winmark early next year we are delighted to be collaborating with them alongside Browne Jacobson and O Shaped to survey AI adoption amongst in-house legal teams. Our aim is to gather insights on the impact of AI with a view to sharing best practice at the event. You can participate in the survey here: https://lnkd.in/ev3RMRsf For further information about the survey or the event, please reach out to Sarita Rai or one of the in-house legal team at Marsden - Karen Glass, Amanda Chard, Kate Bramwell, Liam Richardson or Angela Floydd

When did you last review your LinkedIn profile? Here’s three reasons to do it regularly. It should: 1. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 how you want your current clients—and colleagues— to perceive you. The latter is important for internal perceptions – and winning work. 2. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 you to win work from the type of future clients you want to attract. 3. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 how you want to be found for your next role - even when you are not actively looking for new opportunities. Remember to look through the lenses of clients, colleagues and your dream employer. For more career tips and guidance, please visit our Marsden Insights page 👇https://lnkd.in/eATd2ABF

High salaries, 0%/low income tax, beautiful beaches – while enjoying top-quality work? As the weather gets colder in the UK, some of us dream of living in warmer climes. Perhaps it’s time you thought about a move offshore to an attractive location such as the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, or the British Virgin Islands? With a legal system originating in UK common law, and requiring lawyers to have a Commonwealth qualification to practice, working offshore in this location offers an easy transition for UK and Irish lawyers who are looking to spend a few years in the Caribbean. There is demand for 3+ PQE lawyers in investment funds, corporate, banking and finance, litigation/insolvency, private client and trusts. If you would like to discuss your options and find out about other current opportunities, please get in touch with one of our experienced and friendly team: 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻: Sally Gardner, Alex Russell or Carl Pace 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆: Jonathan Walmsley or Ben Smith

I had a fantastic week with our NY team last week. Here are some of the most active roles our Associate team are currently working on in NYC: - Debt Finance - 2 years and up - we have materials we can share for you with this team which give an in-depth breakdown of the diversity of the practice. This group are open to Australians and Canadians as well as local candidates. This group covers everything from borrower and lender instructions to fund finance. - M&A / PE - 2-6 years - tier 1 ranked practice where you will receive incredible training. A real door opener for you going forwards. - Project Finance - 2 - 6 years - another market leading group working alongside some of the nicest Partners and Associates you can meet (I have worked with this group for so many years that several of them have become personal friends). - M&A - class of 2020 and more senior - a lawyer at this firm described it to me as "it is big law but it does not feel like big law" - really diverse practice where you will not be siloed. - Restructuring - mid-level - Mixed restructuring and bankruptcy practice (mix of creditor and debtor side instructions and a mix of transactions and high stakes litigation). Email me for more info: david.nicol@marsdengroup.com or reach out to one of our US associate team Matt Moody, Gillian Morgan, Sophia Arkley, Bridget White, George Webster Follow me for more #biglaw market intel, commentary and roles
