My BETT 2025 Show “Bingo Card” was almost full this year! If you went, how many did you tick off the list? Which ones did I miss? 😜 Also…
… met some super inspiring people, brilliant start-ups and went to outstanding talks.
👀 A few of things that stood out this year:
😎 So much chat about AI which was expected - it can rather overshadow other great innovations, and many of the applications of it still need a lot of refinement before they will start to really save teacher time. Plus, as Patrick Devanney from ClassLink said, caution is key, especially when sharing data.
But the companies that use existing AI engines like ChatGPT and then make it accessible for teachers through an easy-to-use UI and sensible guardrails seem to be really doing a great service to educators. Shout out to Quizizz!
🤓 The “live classroom” arena stole the show for me. Watching a live maths lesson run by LEO Academy Trust was so inspiring. Their students were able to show how technology enhances education in a way that I’ve never seen at BETT before. If companies can show their tech in action like this, it removes the barrier to adoption and application instantly. Especially loved when one of the students took over the mic. Future host in the making! 🎤 Cheryl Shirley who narrated the lesson and Julaan Govier who taught it were outstanding.
🤩 In the startup area the variety of solutions was awesome to see. Stand out for me was Alex at Bow Tie Maths. Breaking down the GCSE maths curriculum and generating predictive grades from infinite practice questions is superb. Moving away from percentage assessment scores, to tangible exam-specific predictions will turn data into usable information for teachers. A real “why has no one else done this before” moment. He’s using AI a bit, but didn’t make a fuss, instead focussing on a key pain point for teachers and how his product directly solves that problem. I expect he’ll be on a bigger stand next year.
👫 A lot of exhibitors sharing stands this year. Partly due to consolidation in the market, partly perhaps due to the challenges of getting ROI from BETT these days. Buddying up, or joining a bigger company is sometimes the only way smaller teams can still have a presence at BETT.
Some inspiring chats too with Henry Warren, Peter Burgess, the Wonde team, and Phill Kay and many others.
Lovely also to share the week with Alex Hansford, fellow Maths Circle LTD amigo. 😀
If you went, what did you learn or see differently this year?
