About us

Merman is a production and entertainment company working across the US and UK. As well as scripting award-winning TV and film, Merman is globally renowned for creating and executing the next generation of branded entertainment, advertising and premium short form content. Merman was founded in 2014 by award-winning duo Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford, and under their leadership Merman Television has won multiple accolades including five BAFTAs and multiple Emmy and RTS nominations. Merman’s recent TV projects include: Dreamland for Sky, Catastrophe for Channel 4/Amazon, Frank of Ireland for Channel 4/Amazon, Divorce for HBO, This Way Up for Hulu/Channel 4, There She Goes for BBC4, Women on the Verge for UKTV, Motherland for BBC2, Bad Sisters for Apple, plus many more. Merman’s first feature film Herself, a co-production with Element Pictures, written by Claire Dunne and Malcolm Campbell and starring Dunne, premiered at 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Merman’s advertising and branded division has offices in London, New York and Los Angeles, and is led by Managing Partners Kira Carstensen, Ellen Clarke, and Annique DeCaestecker. The London office is under the directorship of joint Managing Directors Siobhan Murphy and Spencer Dodd. In addition to commercial content helmed by an award-winning roster of directors, Merman’s focus is to bring writers and creators from their TV and film family into scripting entertainment for brands in collaboration with agency partners. In 2018 Merman launched Mermade, its brand new digitally focused digital sister, specializing in the creation of content of all shapes and sizes, funded by and for social and streaming platforms, brands and publishers, with a particular focus on short-form episodic.

Starring Hailee Steinfeld and cancer survivor Wanda Sykes, cleverly urging the importance of regular breast checks to stay ahead of cancer. Directed by MJ and produced by Moxie US, this impactful call to action marks a powerful return to her roots and follows up hot on the heels of M&S Christmas food.

    This week, along with our friends at Creative Outpost, we welcomed the winners of a competition organised by House 337 as part of the IPA’s Advertising Unlocked initiative. At Merman, we strive to nurture young talent so we’re proud to be a part of this incredible initiative. They had the chance to explore how we bring stories to life, from concept to final product and what opportunities are available in the world of production. A huge congratulations to the winners! We look forward to seeing where their talent takes them next. A big thanks to Nicola Weekly from La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School and Kainan Belfatmi, alongside Kimoy Mais, Victoria Fischer, and Nici Robson from House 337 for making this opportunity possible.

    To mark the 50th anniversary of Women’s Aid, we’re proud to share a very special project that Merman has made in partnership with LadBible. The aim was to tell a story, targeted at young people that examines how small controlling actions can escalate into full-blown abuse, and how we all have a role to play in identifying the red flags. The project was written by Bad Sisters writer Ailbhe Keogan, with Sharon Horgan and Dearbhla Walsh overseeing as executive creatives. Director Rachel Stubbings (from the duo BARBARA) superbly harnessed the nuanced subject matter in an impactful, warm and emotive way.
