MFL Mentoring

Higher Education

Inspiring young learners in Wales to discover their language selves through mentoring.

About us

MFL Mentoring encourages the study of international languages at GCSE level and beyond via a programme of face-to-face and online mentoring. We do this by partnering university students with secondary schools across Wales to increase learners’ motivation for languages and to raise aspirations for Higher Education. We advocate for all languages, introducing young people to the diversity of languages, cultures, and peoples in our world, igniting their curiosity for language learning and stimulating a sense of global citizenship.

🌟 Thrilled to Share an Exciting Achievement! 🌟 I am delighted to announce that I have successfully completed my Multilingual Mentoring Placement at Stacey Primary School as part of a pilot project led by MFL Mentoring This inspiring and rewarding experience allowed me to engage young learners in creative ways, linking languages to names, colours, food, music, and even dogs. These interactive sessions made language learning fun and memorable, and it was a true highlight to see students connect with languages so enthusiastically. A heartfelt thank you to the team at MFL Mentoring for pioneering this project and offering incredible support throughout. A special thanks to Ana Carrasco Salgueiro for her guidance and encouragement! I’m also deeply grateful to the staff and students at Stacey Primary School for their collaboration and enthusiasm, which made this placement so impactful. During this journey, I developed valuable skills such as effective communication, mentoring, and teamwork, while gaining a deeper appreciation for how language education can inspire confidence and creativity. It has been an honour to be one of the first participants in this exciting initiative, and I look forward to seeing how it evolves in the future! #Education #MFLMentoring

One word....WOW‼️ Usually I like the dust to settle before reflecting on an event, but after MFL Mentoring's celebration of International Languages at the Senedd yesterday I couldn’t stop myself from jumping straight on here to say how proud I am to be part of this phenomenal team with Lucy Jenkins, Glesni Owen, Laura Corillon, Lowri Evans, Ana Carrasco Salgueiro, Beth Mumford, Firial B. and Alexandra Nita! Lucy Jenkins, Glesni Owen and Claire Gorrara were joined by Dr Ian Collen and Elin Arfon to share valuable research regarding IL in Wales during the lunchtime Senedd event. We were also delighted to have Isobel Taylor and her colleagues from Butterfly Data join us as we shared the first glimpse of our new dashboard which will enable us to identify trends in IL teaching and learning across Wales. It will be a game-changer for us and our hope is that it will help inform policy-making going forward. Our evening event was a showcase and celebration of International Languages in Wales and we were thrilled to be joined by so many colleagues, stakeholders, current mentors, former mentors and friends of the project. Guests were treated to an ‘In Conversation’ panel with Elin Arfon, Sioned Harold, Maryam Awawdeh and Geinor Cuvillier who shared their experiences and highlights of working with MFL Mentoring. Glesni Owen and I both felt very privileged to host the Q&A in Welsh ❣️. There was also a roundtable chaired by our wonderful Academic Lead Claire Gorrara, with colleagues Professor Rachael Langford, Susana Galván Hernández, Dr. Laura Gurney and Professor Charles Burdett sharing their valuable insights. Diolch yn fawr to Lynne Neagle for attending and also bringing the event to a close. We are also incredibly thankful to Heledd Fychan for sponsoring the events and for giving us the platform to bring everyone together in one room to celebrate the power of languages. My standout moment of the evening was when mentors past and present were all asked to stand, it felt so powerful and special to recognise the young people who make our project so special – you are all AMAZING! We were joined by so many wonderful colleagues and friends that it’s impossible to tag you all in this post but we want to thank you for being a part of our 10-year anniversary celebrations! My final diolch yn fawr goes to Lucy Jenkins who is nothing short of inspirational – we couldn’t wish for a better leader and I’ve no doubt we could all benefit from being a little more Lucy Jenkins 😊 Here’s to the next 10 years MFL Mentoring
