Everything tracks back to the ocean, and our company’s origin story is no exception 🌊 Seeing the ocean’s struggle against plastic pollution was a turning point for our Co-Founder, Jen Keane. It’s estimated that over a third of microplastics in our oceans originate from synthetic textiles. These microscopic plastic fibres not only harm marine wildlife, but also have been shown to infiltrate our soil, our drinking water, and our food chains. While working as a material designer at a leading sportswear brand, Jen joined forces with Parley for the Oceans. Together, they repurposed ocean plastics into footwear, driven by a shared mission to clean up our seas. However, it soon became clear that recycling alone will not protect our precious oceans from the scourge of plastic. The imperative was clear: we need to design plastic out of the materials we use – for good. In a full-circle moment, Jen recently sat down with Parley to reflect on our journey: from the early days of growing a shoe upper in her kitchen, to the scalable technology Modern Synthesis is developing today. Our goal is to create a future where fashion's pursuit of performance no longer leads back to the ocean, but instead leads to a future where creativity and circularity go hand in hand. Did Deborah Meaden say “brilliant bacteria” after seeing our tech on BBC The One Show? Yep, you heard that right! 🦠🌟🧫 And she’s right – these tiny powerhouses are not as scary as you might think. In fact, some bacteria can be very good for us – if you’ve ever had probiotic yoghurt, kombucha, or an ice cold beer, you’ve already enjoyed the benefits that bacteria bring. But bacteria can produce much more than gut-friendly drinks and yoghurts. Did you know they’re especially efficient at making our key raw ingredient, nanocellulose? At Modern Synthesis, we’re harnessing the natural efficiency of one of nature’s oldest life forms to revolutionise textile production. From fermentation to finished material, these microbial marvels are paving the way to a materially better future. Now Deborah, let’s talk 🤝 Watch the feature on BBC iPlayer at 01:40: https://lnkd.in/eCW-49K7 #Biotechnology #SustainableFashion #MaterialInnovation #Fermentation #Bacteria

In an unassuming London laboratory on an industrial estate is a shoe - but not just any shoe - this one is made with bacteria. This is the work of Modern Synthesis, a biotechnology company that’s literally bringing life to a new branch of fashion. Their innovative approach to material design uses K.rhaeticus bacteria (found in kombucha) to create lightweight, strong, and naturally biodegradable materials. In collaboration with major brands like Ganni A/S these new textiles could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by displacing plastic-based materials and animal leathers. “Nature is the ultimate circular economy and we have a lot to learn from the organisms that were here many years before us,” co-founder Jen Keane shares with us. “I’m a designer by background, but I also dabbled in the sciences - and I quickly learned that you can’t make change without all of these different disciplines working together.” Get a firsthand look at the plastic-free products they’re making, the science behind it all and their journey into the fashion industry in the full Material Revolution interview. https://lnkd.in/gK8AqNhq

It was very exciting to be on BBC The One Show last night, showcasing Modern Synthesis and the microbial magic happening in our London lab. I remember at around 7 years old being devastated to miss out on a Blue Peter badge for my terrible submissions to their competitions. Years later though I’m delighted to sneak in my own “here's one we made earlier” moment on BBC 1! It was a real honour to give a tour of our facility to Lucy Siegle, a pioneering environmental journalist who has long been advocating for change in the fashion industry’s harmful practices. Reading Lucy’s book “To Die For” a decade ago helped me connect the dots between innovation and fashion, making this a full-circle moment as I got to share our progress with her and a national audience. It’s a great depiction of the groundbreaking work our team is doing in reimagining material design with biology. As a technical co-founder, I usually speak in data points. I was delighted to swap numbers for words in the latest Modern Synthesis newsletter where I shared my love of nanocellulose, and the material possibilities opened up by its innate versatility. Cellulose is nature’s shape-shifter. From the fluffy seed case that creates cotton to the bamboo that supplies silky rayon - there’s something poetic about how so many materials and forms can emerge from one humble and abundant polymer. Fashion, too, relies on versatility to innovate and captivate. In the past, the industry has leaned heavily on a toxic cocktail of petrochemical-derived chemicals and plastics to achieve such a diverse material library. This has come at the cost of supply chain efficiencies and ecological impacts, creating a rift between our pursuit of novelty and the planet's ability to regenerate itself. To bring these back into alignment, Modern Synthesis is tapping into Earth’s original cellulosic fibre source: bacteria. We believe that the key to unlocking material versatility doesn't lie underground in oil reserves, waiting to be extracted. Instead, it’s in the microscopic realm, waiting to be discovered and harnessed. The microorganisms we work with produce nanocellulose (BNC), a miracle raw material that combines versatility with strength. The dance between nanocellulose and natural textiles gives us unprecedented control, and the ability to craft composite materials with novel features and aesthetics. Our technology isn't just about making slightly better versions of what is already out there, with slightly less impact. We’re bringing out the poetry in nature’s process, translating it into beautiful textiles, and the best part is we do it all without resorting to plastics or harsh chemicals. By embracing cellulose's adaptability, we're creating a new category of materials with the artistry and resilience that nature intended. — Every quarter, we send a round-up of progress from our London lab, stories from the wider biocommunity, and our take on the material transformation sweeping across fashion and beyond. While trends come and go, fashion's love affair with plastics has contributed to a global crisis of pollution and environmental degradation—one that won’t pass as quickly as this season’s fads. From runway to landfill, synthetic materials dominate the fashion landscape. Almost two-thirds of materials in circulation today are synthetic (Textile Exchange), covering a broad category of materials typically derived from petroleum and thus predominantly plastic. Synthetic leathers are another subset favoured as “vegan” alternatives to high-emission animal leathers. While plastic-based leathers might seem preferable in terms of reduced emissions and animal welfare, in reality, they drive fossil fuel extraction and leave a polluting trail of toxic chemicals and microplastics in their wake. This trade-off comes at a steep cost to human and planetary health 🌎 It's clear that merely swapping one material for another without rethinking our approach to production and design won't be enough. To truly decarbonise fashion and rid our clothing of microplastic-shedding fibres, we need to scale responsible alternatives from bio-based sources 🌱 At Modern Synthesis, we're leading the way by harnessing one of Earth's more surprising cellulosic fibre sources—bacteria—to create durable and desirable materials 🦠 We do this without using any plastics or petrochemical-derived binders and coatings, promoting a fossil-free future for fashion without compromising on quality or creativity 💚 #EarthDay #PlanetVsPlastics #PlasticFree #FashionRevolutionWeek
