The Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre is set to host the inaugural Junior International Gig Rowing Championships this coming Saturday (12th October) as teams from across the world converge in Britain’s Ocean City ready to row in a series of races within the Cattewater. In recent years the Mount Batten Centre has welcomed adult crews from around the country to compete in National Championships and are delighted to be supporting this new Junior event which has been developed as part of the Wave of Events project; the project aims to deliver more gig rowing events, including competition opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy as participants and spectators. Esther Pearson Ⓥ 🌱, CEO, Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre: “We are thrilled to welcome young gig rowers from around the world to Plymouth for this exciting championship. The Centre provides the perfect host venue – direct waterfront access for the teams onto the Cattewater for the racing, excellent spectator vantage points, as well as shore-based facilities for crew and supporters. We look forward to witnessing some fantastic racing and encourage everyone to come out and cheer on the competitors.” The Junior International Gig Rowing Championships are kindly sponsored by Plymouth Citybus and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership . It is exciting that competitors from gig rowing communities across the country and beyond will be drawn to Plymouth. Our city is an ideal venue for watersports and we look forward to seeing young people on the water creating a wonderful spectacle for their families and supporters on the shore.” After unfortunate weather conditions and the postponement of racing at Swanage on 6th October, the CPGA has also announced a revised schedule for the Adult National County Championships now to be held at the Centre on Sunday 13th October. The Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre is a key partner in the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park project, made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. As part of the project, the Centre, the Mount Batten Tower and Mount Batten peninsula will all benefit with improvements and enhancements to amplify the visitor experience. Last week we welcomed some of the Ocean Conservation Trust / National Marine Aquarium team to us for their team activities afternoon! After a fun session on our giant SUPs the group took in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park from a different perspective from the Mount Batten Tower! An exciting new partnership has been announced today between Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Plymouth Sound National Marine Park for Seafest! Our taster sessions are sure to make a splash over the popular Seafest weekend - more details of how to have a SUPer time with us will be available soon!

Last week we hosted our first Plymouth Sound National Marine Park marine citizenship activity programme. Young people from Pembroke Youth Club had an action packed four days completing a range of watersports and marine citizenship activities utilising PSNMP’s blue and green spaces; kayaking, rafting, giant paddleboarding, coastal walks and rockpooling – we fitted it all in for these future ocean stewards. Across the remainder of the summer holidays we will be engaging with other young people from across Plymouth to complete marine citizenship activities during Year 1 of the PSNMP Horizons project. The Plymouth Sound National Marine Park Horizons project has been made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery Players with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. #YourSummerYourSound #PSNMP

Over the past few days, we've all looked out and noticed a wave a colourful sails vivifying the Sound. The Associated British Ports World Cadet Sailing Championships has arrived in our National Marine Park. Hundreds of young sailors, aged from 7 to 17, from around the globe will be competing over a full week of exciting sailing to be crowned world champion from 3rd to 9th August. Prior to the World Championships, the UK Nationals are currently being held in the Sound. Our partners at Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust are hosting all the young competitors throughout both events to make sure they're kitted out and looked after. As an Apprentice you will complete all your training from the Mount Batten Centre, a key gateway to the newly formed Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, where you’ll be trained to instruct a wide range of water and land based adventurous activities.
