About us

Plymouth Citybus, part of the Go-Ahead Group runs the largest bus operation in Plymouth City and surrounding communities. Plymouth Citybus was formed in 1986 to take over the operations of Plymouth City Council Passenger Transport Department. However, its origins can be traced right back to 1892 when its predecessors introduced horse trams to the Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport areas. Today Plymouth Citybus is at the heart of the local community; it is a patron of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and is represented in many local forums affecting life in the city. The company operates a modern fleet, and provides the local service for Plymouth customers. We employ around 550 staff and carry over 18 million passengers a year. We are part of the Go-Ahead Group Ltd, an international transport group and one of the UK’s leading public transport providers.

DBI Black History Celebration Bus Launch We are thrilled to share the success of the DBI Black History Celebration Bus launch, held on 2nd October. The event was a fantastic display of community spirit and collaboration, bringing together friends, partners and supporters to witness the unveiling of this special bus ahead of Black History Month. Ptown radio and BBC Radio Devon were on hand to capture the excitement, alongside the Plymouth Citybus team, who were instrumental in making this vision a reality. The bus stands as a testament to the dedication of everyone involved, particularly our close friends from DBI and valued members of our community who were present to see the bus for the very first time. Launched in perfect time for Black History Month, the bus will serve as a moving tribute to Plymouth's diverse communities. With this year’s theme, "Reclaiming Narratives", the bus celebrates the effort to redress historical inaccuracies and reclaim the often untold stories, histories and complexities of Black heritage. This bus is not only a visual reminder of the rich diversity within Plymouth, but it is also a symbol of the ongoing commitment to amplifying voices that have been historically marginalised. We look forward to seeing the DBI Black History Celebration Bus on the streets of Plymouth, carrying its important message of unity, diversity and historical recognition throughout Black History Month and beyond.
