MSD Animal Health UK Ltd Animal Health UK’s new general manager Helene Lanz came out on farm with one of our key customers recently with @Ingrid Potter, our pig key account manager. Ingrid said: “It was brilliant to take Helene on-farm to see how Mike Baker and the team at North Farm Livestock – part of Pilgrim's Europe group - work. They truly represent the gold standard for outdoor production when it comes to the health and welfare of their pigs. “This farm’s dedication to improving welfare has led to the adoption of IDAL for improved piglet welfare, and to the development of vaccination raceway systems to improve handling efficiencies which reduce stress for pigs and people during routine vaccinations. “We really enjoyed seeing the pigs who seemed both inquisitive and happy to see the humans that work with them. “We are really proud to work closely with producers and supply chain businesses such as Pilgrim’s and North Farm Livestock - not only to support them but also learn from their experiences.”

Why vaccinate against Porcine Circovirus (PCV)? Continuing to vaccinate against PCV is crucial not only for maximising pig efficiency and performance but also for reducing antibiotic usage, a key concern for the UK livestock industry. Vaccination reduces the risk of disease outbreaks that can significantly impact farm operations and profitability. Studies show that using PCV vaccines can lead to a positive return on investment, demonstrating the clear value of investing in pig health. PCV causes a disease that not only affects pigs' well-being but also leads to uneven growth and poor feed efficiency, potentially harming the economic viability of a business. Investing in PCV vaccination is investing in the future health and success of your farm. #AnimalHealth #PCVVaccination #SustainableFarming

Following our recent veterinary workshops focusing on PCV, MSD Animal Health UK Veterinary Technical Manager for Pigs, Dr. Serena Shanahan has a handy tip for producers and vets when testing for Porcine Circovirus (PCV) within herds. “Our diagnostic service means we can test for multiple diseases as part of the screening process. “I always say to producers and vets to tick the box for PCV PCR screening to help cover all bases and ensure this disease isn’t the root cause of any on-farm challenges. “Building this check it into your annual plan is an easy way to keep on top of disease.” To find out more about MSD Animal Health’s diagnostic service contact your key account manager. #ScienceOfHealthierAnimals #SwineHealth #PigFarming #AnimalHealth

Following our recent Porcine Circovirus (PCV) veterinary workshops, MSD Animal Health UK Veterinary Technical Manager for Pigs, Dr. Serena Shanahan, advises farmers and vets to work together to implement the best PCV vaccination schedule for their system. “Although it is common to vaccinate piglets to control disease during the postweaning and finishing phases, providing a booster PCV vaccination to sows offers a significant advantage to help keep on top of this disease. “Vaccinating sows helps to strengthen immunity to PCV, which can subsequently support young piglets.” #ScienceOfHealthierAnimals #SwineHealth #PigFarming #AnimalHealth

When it’s difficult to put a finger on what is challenging individuals within a pig herd, Porcine Circovirus (PCV) is a disease not to be ignored. This can cause serious performance setbacks for young and older animals. MSD Animal Health UK recently hosted two veterinary workshops; one in Norfolk and the other in Yorkshire, specifically for pig vets, focusing on PCV. At the events, Joaquim Segalés, a professor in the department of animal health and anatomy and faculty of veterinary medicine at Universitat Autònomia de Barcelona, and Marta Jimenez Salvador MSD Animal Health Technical Manager for Swine in Spain, shared their insight into PCV from a veterinary perspective. “Generally, we’re seeing PCV being successfully managed by robust management programmes which includes routine vaccination for both sows and weaners,” says MSD Animal Health Veterinary Technical Manager for Pigs, Dr. Serena Shanahan. “Vaccinations are providing good cross protection and the disease is being well controlled in vaccinated units. “These workshops provided a great forum for vets to discuss this disease from a clinical perspective and share experiences among peers.” #ScienceOfHealthierAnimals #SwineHealth #PigFarming #AnimalHealth
