It was a great honour to attend a panel session this afternoon hosted by Bradley Thomas MP unveiling the findings of the Commission on the Future of Independent Schools at Westminster Palace. There was insightful commentary from Jodh Dhesi, Joseph Spence, Dame Alison Peacock DL, DLitt & Ralph Lucas who discussed the provenance, themes and validity of the report’s recommendations. En route, I was struck by the duality of the view from Westminster Bridge - on the inauguration day for Donald Trump, a protest banner spanned the South Bank whilst in my direct line of sight, the British values of democracy and freedom of speech seemed enshrined in an iconic view of the Houses of Parliament. It felt a poignant moment. Thank you to Daniel Lilley and Civitas for the invitation! • Banstead Preparatory School was formed in 2017 through the merger of three independent schools, to form a co-educational school for children aged 2-11. Whilst initial pupil numbers were strong, they gradually began to contract, which is when Head of Marketing & Admissions, Adrienne Forster, recognised the need for a data-driven admissions strategy. Having reached out to her industry contacts, MTM Consulting came widely recommended and so were commissioned to undertake detailed market research that would inform future action plans. Adrienne and her team wanted to understand: ☑️ Banstead’s current share of the market. ☑️ The location of current students and the implications of the recent merger. ☑️ The lifestyles of current and potential families that align with the school’s values. ☑️ The number of 2-3 and 4-10 years olds in each postcode sector that could potentially attend the school. ☑️ Projected change in the target market for the next 5-10 years. The market research completed by MTM helped provide an overview of the current marketplace, as well as highlighting the types of family that were currently, and could potentially, use the school – where they lived, their lifestyle and what they looked for in their children’s education. The research subsequently informed a strategic action plan that enabled Adrienne and her team to target the parents of potential pupils more precisely and with a clear, concise message that would align with their values. In this challenging climate for independent schools, does your school have all the information it needs to make the right decisions for the future? • Malta is not alone in this. There are numerous nations that provide vouchers and/or tax credits for students to use the independent sector. They accept that the government must use every available resource to get pupils the education they so desperately need, giving working people greater choice over where they receive their education, and providing more support to the areas in greatest need. Some of you may recognise the last sentence. It's a direct quote from Keir Starmer's recent speech on the partnership between the NHS and the private health sector, with 'patients' and 'treatment' replaced by 'pupils' and 'education'. Now there's a thought!

The introduction of VAT on school fees in the UK has already caused, as predicted, job losses and school closures in the 10 days since its inception. The impact on pupils, staff, and all their families is desperately sad and frustrating. Meanwhile, here in Malta (and undoubtedly other countries across the world), we are in the process of collating data for Malta Tax and Customs so that they are able to make the necessary tax deduction for parents who educate their children in the independent sector. This deduction recognises that parents have already paid for a place in a government school for their child, and by educating their child elsewhere they are easing the strain on the public education system. Independent schools aren’t viewed negatively in Malta (or, again, in other countries) in the way that they are in the UK; they are seen as an additional option for parents who are trying to make the best choices for their individual child and will make many sacrifices in order to be able to do so. They certainly aren’t used as a pawn in a shameful political game. This has resulted in the UK taking a dangerous and impactful retrograde step in terms of serving the current generation of learners, their families, and the many individuals who are employed in all sorts of roles within those school communities. I won’t repeat all the points that many of my colleagues have already voiced so eloquently regarding the foolishness of this move, but I did want to demonstrate how other countries understand that a tax on Education is the opposite of progress. • A co-educational day and boarding school, Lord Wandsworth College has increased its numbers steadily over the last few years, resulting in a strong position to face the challenges of the future. To inform the school’s strategy, the school wanted insight and analysis on the markets currently served by the College and how they will change up to 2031. As a result of an MTM 3-60 analysis, we were able to demonstrate that while the College had an excellent market share within much of the catchment area, they were missing certain key areas where the market is projected to grow by between 13.1 and 15.4% to 2031. 🏘️ 🏠 🏡 We were also able to supply details of many planned residential developments, along with a number of school projects within their catchment area, potentially increasing competition and feeder opportunities. 🚌 🚌 🚌 Three extra bus routes were also highlighted to access potential markets on which the school may have missed out. Direct data insights could help your school map out a more resilient future.
