Mums In Need is seeking donations of laptops with 15-16 inch screens to support our hardworking staff team. Many of our current laptops are reaching the end of their lifespan and can no longer support Windows 11, making upgrades impossible. Laptops like the HP 255 G9 or G7 have proven to be reliable for a fortunate few on our team, so similar models would be especially appreciated. (See the picture below for reference!) Your generous donation will directly help our team to continue their critical behind-the-scenes work, supporting women navigating the challenges of post-separation abuse. If you or your business have a laptop to donate, please don’t hesitate to email us at enquiries@mumsinneed.com – we’d love to hear from you! Thank you so much for your support 💜🙏 #SupportMumsInNeed #DonateLaptops #TechForGood #PostSeparationAbuse

“I went to the police, but other than giving me a reference number, they didn’t take the matter further” This is another experience of one of our mums. Her experience is a stark reminder that the legal system doesn't always understand the complexities of coercive control. Despite reporting the abuse, she felt unheard and unsupported. At Mums In Need, we recognise the signs of coercive control and are committed to providing expert guidance and support to our mums. Your £10 donation can help us provide legal support to mums in need. Together, we can ensure that no woman faces this ordeal alone. https://lnkd.in/eScm3ZD9 #MumsInNeed #DomesticViolence #CoerciveControl

“Finally.” That was the response from some of the mums we work with to the news of greater transparency being applied to family court proceedings. Following a pilot scheme that operated in around half of family courts in England and Wales, transparency will be rolled out across courts starting from January 2025. Whilst protecting privacy, especially of children, is of course imperative, the secrecy of family court proceedings has often ramped up stress on parents. Crucially, the lack of reporting on family courts has also meant that judgements and decisions could go unchecked. A BBC News article references the case of a young mother in Cardiff spending tens of thousands of pounds to protect her young daughter from her ex-husband who was a convicted paedophile. Lifting reporting restrictions has also enabled judges’ comments to be heard, including a woman who’d suffered coercive control being told “It’s not like you were beaten.” Unfortunately, such shocking comments don’t surprise us at Mums In Need. We work with mums who are suffering post-separation abuse. This is abuse that happens after the relationship has ended. When an abuser wants to retain control of an ex-partner, the family courts can be used as a tool to perpetuate that abuse. (Children and finances are often the only ways abusers have left to control ex-partners.) We see every day how women have been silenced, often first by an abuser and then again by the system they hope will protect them. Greater transparency in family court proceedings was a recommendation from the Government’s Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales in 2023. She also acknowledged that the family court system ‘retraumatises domestic abuse victims’. Of course, we do have concerns that abusers could use this freedom to accentuate their abuse. There’s a balance to be struck and it will take time to see how this works out. Yet we hope that by having more voices heard, and those who’ve suffered post-separation abuse listened to, the family courts can take steps to better support survivors and prevent family courts from being a tool for abusers. If you're a fan of Emmerdale, you’ve watched Tom and Belle’s abusive relationship unfold, and yesterday’s episode delivered a powerful message about post-separation abuse. Tom King’s conviction isn’t just a victory for Belle Dingle—it’s a stark reminder of how coercive control and manipulation can escalate after a relationship ends. Tom’s behaviour , from tracking Belle’s movements to trying to destroy evidence of his abuse, highlights the insidious nature of post-separation abuse. This form of abuse—often overlooked and underreported—continues after a breakup, as abusers use tactics like surveillance, stalking, and financial control to maintain power. Tom’s use of cameras and trackers disguised as "security" illustrates just how far some will go to control their victims, even after the relationship is over. Belle’s courageous testimony in court shed light on the psychological toll of coercive control, challenging Tom’s lies and showing the emotional scars that are often harder to see but just as damaging as physical abuse. The jury's internal conflict mirrored the confusion many victims face, as emotional and psychological abuse can be complex and difficult to understand. One of the most impactful moments of the storyline was a flashback that showcased real-life stories of women who’ve experienced similar abuse. This powerful narrative gave a voice to those whose struggles are often silenced. The emotional cost of living under constant surveillance and manipulation is all too real for many survivors. Tom’s three-year prison sentence is significant, but the real victory is in Belle’s ongoing journey toward healing. Her decision to attend a support group for survivors shows the importance of community and connection in recovery. Healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens through understanding and shared strength. This storyline also underscores how society and the legal system often fail to fully recognise the extent of post-separation abuse. By shining a light on this issue, Emmerdale sparks a much-needed conversation about what abuse truly looks like, encouraging more support for victims. While this story line is fiction, Tom’s conviction is a reminder that post-separation abuse is real, pervasive, and can continue to cause harm long after a relationship ends. For anyone who has experienced coercive control or emotional manipulation, Belle’s story is a beacon of hope. Hopefully it will inspire others to speak out, expose the truth, and reclaim one’s strength. Well done Emmerdale for shining a light on post-separation abuse.🙌 Read about it here: https://lnkd.in/ezyPvg7N
