This week's "Impact Startups to Watch" spotlight is on 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬. As the construction industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, a new generation of startups is developing innovative materials from unexpected sources. By incorporating waste products, fungi, and agricultural byproducts into construction materials, these ventures are helping to decarbonize one of the world's most resource-intensive industries. From biochar-enhanced materials to panels made from sawdust, here are five startups transforming how we build: Mykor is a biotechnology and advanced materials company developing commercially viable and sustainable building materials from waste and fungi. Berlin-based Carbon Instead aims to reduce the carbon footprint of construction materials by turning them into long-term carbon stores, incorporating waste-based biochar into their composition. NERA ECO CONSTRUCTION is a sustainable construction startup revolutionizing the industry with 3D-printed façade panels made from upcycled sawdust waste. Their panels improve energy efficiency, store carbon, and are lightweight, customizable, and easy to assemble/disassemble. AGREKA BUILD LTD aims to decarbonise the construction and agricultural industries by converting farm waste into building materials. Their flagship product is the world’s first circular bio-insulation product made from 100% natural wheat straw fibre. Finnish startup Block solutions Oy is developing eco-friendly ‘block modules’ that can be used to make safe, durable and affordable homes on a globally-scalable basis. The blocks can either contain 50% organic fibres and 50% recycled plastics or, can be made up of locally-available raw materials. #sustainableconstruction #ecobuildings #sustainablematerials
