"Nine out of ten organizations are already adopting AI/ML-based simulation techniques". That was one of the findings of a recent study by McKinsey & Company, undertaken in conjunction with NAFEMS. Whilst the level of maturity of the use of those techniques is still, in most instances, relatively low, almost all companies are already experimenting with what may be possible. The increase in the level of adoption over the past five years is dramatic. The report detailing the findings can be downloaded using the link below:

Cake*. If the cake mixture isn’t quite right, ingredient proportions are off and the whole thing is under-baked/ soggy-bottomed/overbaked / whatever other baking term exists for ‘failure’, it’s done, game over. Next destination; the bin. You can, of course, start over and try again, change the quantities /ingredient ratios, etc. But what if you didn’t mix it yourself in the first place and don’t have the recipe? How do you know what to change to fix it? (*It’s still post-Christmas self-flagellation season. The world is on a diet. Allow us our food daydreams.) Now, back to reality. Instead of a cake, you have a finite element model and it won’t work. The reasons aren’t immediately obvious, and the error messages make little sense. Why is that? Industry veteran and independent consultant Patrick Morelle suggests it's primarily because ‘solvers are now totally integrated into very complete (and complex) global architectures’ and buried in the depths of your user interface. So, how do you reach in through that complexity and fix the one thing that’s causing the problem? Don’t throw your software into the bin, or bug out (we’ll see ourselves out). Read Patrick Morelle’s article ‘Debugging Finite Element Models’ in our latest issue of Benchmark instead. It’ll help give you some perspective and set you on your way to figuring out solutions that actually work. During COVID I created a series of free webinars for the FEA community One of the webinar topics was St Venant’s principle https://bit.ly/st_venants There are many cases where we introduce FEA 'shortcuts' such as the spider elements shown here. St Venant's is a useful concept to get some understanding of the zone of influence of these features and how to visualize where good stress distribution can be found in the models. The webinar discusses the background and shows examples. A 30 minute presentation is followed by 30 minutes curated Q and A. This topic and many others are discussed in my upcoming Introduction to FEA course. Presented in collaboration with NAFEMS. https://bit.ly/intro_fea
