NAPAC - the National Association for People Abused in Childhood

A growing theme in calls to NAPAC’s support line in recent weeks has been PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). More and more survivors are telling us they have been diagnosed with PTSD. For many, this diagnosis brings a sense of validation - an acknowledgment of the profound impact of the abuse they endured. But alongside that relief comes frustration. Survivors tell us that specialist, affordable and long-term support remains out of reach, especially for those living with complex PTSD - something that cannot be resolved with a few sessions of short-term therapy. At NAPAC, we are privileged to listen to and learn from survivors every day. Their voices shape our work, and their experiences drive us to push for real, systemic change. The Home Office has announced an additional suite of protective measures as part of the Crime and Policing Bill. It isn't often you know you're witnessing a seismic change in real time, but this is one such moment. Real kudos to the government for these decisions that will have a hugely positive effect for victims and survivors. We hear from thousands of survivors on the NAPAC - the National Association for People Abused in Childhood support line every year. They tell us how powerful and healing a sincere apology, backed by action, can be. The clarification of the law on apologies ensures that organisations can acknowledge past failures and take responsibility without legal uncertainty. We also know that for too long, survivors who found the courage to come forward were met not with justice, but with legal barriers - told they were ‘too late’ to hold those responsible to account. Removing the limitation period recognises that trauma does not operate on a legal timetable. It ensures survivors are not excluded from seeking redress simply because of how long it takes to be ready to disclose. This is a truly good day. It is a victory for the power of testimony, for the power of listening to survivors, truly listening, and learning from them. It tells survivors that the law, and by extension society, is now fighting alongside them for justice. https://lnkd.in/e7mPBWFW

The Ministry of Justice has announced landmark reforms to support survivors of child sexual abuse. The significance of these changes cannot be overstated: - Three-year limit for compensation claims to be axed – enabling survivors to come forward when ready. - Burden of proof to shift from survivors to defendants – protecting survivors from reliving trauma. - Measures deliver recommendations of Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. This is a victory for the power of testimony. A victory for the thousands of survivors who bravely contributed to the Truth Project, the IICSA recommendations, and the thousands more who share their stories with NAPAC each year. The Home Office has announced four measures addressing AI-facilitated child sexual abuse, which will be introduced as part of the Crime and Policing Bill when it comes to parliament. - Banning the possession of AI tools to create, share, or distribute sexual images of children. - Banning the possession of AI-generated manuals that teach how to produce these images. - New criminal offence against those hosting or operating child sex abuse websites. - New powers for Boarder Force to inspect devices suspected of containing this material. NAPAC welcomes these new AI laws as a crucial step in safeguarding the next generation. The digital world should empower and connect, not be an environment for harm. As technology evolves, so do the risks to children, and it is our collective duty to ensure that laws keep pace.
