The Department of Health and Social Care have called on the public to submit ideas to inform the NHS' '10 Year Health Plan'. To ensure that mental health is prioritised, we have responded as an organisation, and produced guidance and templates for others to use. Our organisational response raised issues such as: • The culture of abuse in the mental health system • The implementation of harmful 'innovations' • The need to reform the Mental Health Act • The risk of harm to trans and non-binary patients • The decimation of community care • The need to acknowledge the connection between mental health and hostile policy making We have also responded to the plan's 3 'big shifts': Moving more care from hospitals to communities, making better use of technology in health and care, and focussing on preventing sickness, not just treating it. We encourage NSUN members to adapt and use both our organisational response and template responses to ensure their voice is heard, and mental health is prioritised in the development of the 10 Year Health Plan. https://lnkd.in/eQxsUhVF

We learnt recently, from comments made by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, that the Government may be planning to trial job coach visits for ‘seriously ill patients’ on mental health wards. The idea that people who are experiencing enough distress to find themselves on mental health wards should spend time talking through their CVs with a job coach, instead of being offered the personalised support they need, is absurd. Work is not – and should never be – the priority when it comes to people experiencing ill-health of any kind, especially while they are in hospital. Statement: https://lnkd.in/ehDvi8JF

"To mark our resistance to what we believe is a misallocation of funds and attention, we have chosen to spotlight areas of existing and necessary work that aim to genuinely support those living in the silences between annual awareness days, those who the signposted services have not supported or ‘saved’. We call for a reconsideration of WMHD in place of year-round funding for user-led groups and the support they provide, as well as structural change and the proper resourcing of our existing statutory mental health services." https://lnkd.in/g5KRcg_E

Created in collaboration with user-led young people’s organisations Revoke and Voice Collective, this project is the result of a series of workshops centring young people with lived experiences of mental ill- health, distress or trauma, who have been failed and disempowered by the safeguarding systems designed to keep them safe. Today, our partner National Survivor User Network, in partnership with Act Build Change, published The Shape of Safety: a guide to reimagining safety and safeguarding alongside young people with lived experience of mental ill-health, distress and trauma. This guide resulted from a series of workshops centring on young people with lived experience of mental ill-health, distress or trauma, who have been failed by safeguarding systems designed to keep them safe. It was created in collaboration with user-led organisations: Revoke and Voice Collective. Their guide celebrates methods of fostering cultures of safety and care within organisations, offering principles for better practice, key questions, and a practitioner’s checklist to support positive change.
