🚢⚕️Dreadnought Medical Service disruption - Scotland and Northern Ireland Nautilus has been made aware that some seafarer patients based in Scotland and Northern Ireland have had difficulties accessing the UK Dreadnought Medical Service. This is due to administrative issues in transferring funds from the devolved nations' healthcare budgets to pay for the care of patients treated in England. The Union's head of professional and technical David Appleton said: 'Nautilus believes that this situation is entirely unacceptable and is committed to restoring a fit-for-purpose service across the UK. 'To this end, we have made representations at the highest level in Scotland, Northern Ireland and with the UK government, with the aim of putting in place a long-term solution to resolve the problem once and for all.' In the meantime, seafarers residing in Northern Ireland and Scotland wishing to be referred to the Dreadnought are advised to follow the procedure as set out on the Seafarers' Hospital Society (SHS) website and to contact Nautilus in the event that they experience any difficulties. What do you do when a company tries to scrap the benefits you are entitled to? 📞 Call your union! 📞 That's what one of our members in Switzerland did - and as a result, our branch there has been able to protect the critical illness insurance that gives peace of mind to the families of workers on the Rhine river. 📣 Have your say 📣 The 2022 amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention are being brought into UK law. The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has opened a consultation into these new regulations, which cover things like the requirement for a balanced diet onboard and the ability for seafarers to connect with friends and family. See the story below if you'd like to share your views and make sure that nothing has been missed! https://lnkd.in/esM56nJM

On 20 November 2024, we received the sad news that Lord Prescott passed away. He was one of only three people to become an honorary member of Nautilus International. Many people may not know that he played a key role in helping the families of seafarers lost during the sinking of the MV Derbyshire to find out what happened to their relatives. Thanks to his Derbyshire inquiry, our ships and seafarers are safer today. Read about his part in the DFA's campaign for answers below:

Join NautilusTV for a behind the scenes look at an ongoing seafarer research project using wearable technology which is looking at the benefits of social interaction, and the impacts of fatigue, activity and rest among seafarers. Known as the Social Interaction Matters (SIM) project, the International Seafarers' Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN) research seeks to understand the impact of social activities and other influences on seafarers’ health. In this interview Nautilus chats with one of the superyacht crew during the third phase of the project, and the lead researcher. The first of its kind project is also working with other volunteer crew participants on board commercial and cruise vessels, as well as superyachts. There are three elements to the project. Volunteer crew wear fitbit watches and that data is cross checked with daily wellbeing questions pushed to them via a mobile app. Also pivotal are volunteer 'social ambassadors', crew who also help collate the data weekly for the researchers and plan social activities. 💼Ever since the P&O Ferries jobs massacre of 2022, Nautilus International has been working hard at Westminster. 💼 We've been lobbying the government to protect maritime workers, and prevent other bad actors from using fire and rehire tactics to replace their UK employees with exploited labour. 🎥The UK government's new Employment Rights Bill addresses some of our key concerns. Watch the video explaining some of the provisions that protect seafarers 🎥

What's next for officers taking industrial action at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary? As the negotiations continue and members are balloted on continuing the strikes, we look at the situation and ask whether the UK government is yet prepared to make a serious pay offer to redress the years of austerity.

🥇 A big success thanks to the courage, resilience and solidarity of Nautilus members! 🥇 After months of campaigning, protest and negotiations, workers at Lloyd's Register have won a pay increase and union recognition from their employer. The process began over a year ago when employees faced high inflation and asked Nautilus to represent them in the battle for pay restoration. When the company refused to engage, the members gathered support, helped others to join the Union, and eventually we brought management to the table. After months of resistance, Lloyd's Register agreed to recognise the hard work of their team with a pay increase five times higher than their initial offer, benefiting all employees, and recognized Nautilus as the official union representing them. 🎥 Watch the video below! 🎥
