A busy old day, which began with me as a panelist/speaker for The Space (Digital Arts) webinar on Immersive tech. I was there to talk about VR180. Then it was onto Dundee for the XR Network event, with lots of impressive work being showcased, mainly in virtual production. Still, came away with thoughts and ideas...

Immersive technologies have the power to transport people to places they might never otherwise be able to go, or to worlds outside their experience or imagination. But what are the guiding principles? How do you decide whether this is a route for your work, or your audience? Our free webinar will cover: * What kinds of experiences can you create in 360 or 180 VR? * What is possible on a restricted budget? * How can VR and immersive sound enhance storytelling? * What’s the role of sound in VR content? * Where are the inspiring examples of VR and immersive sound in arts and culture? Join us in this webinar where we'll be joined by innovation consultant Harmeet Chagger-Khan, immersive filmmaker Kelman Greig-Kicks from Neon8 and audio specialist Clare Savory (was Freeman) to discuss: https://lnkd.in/e_jjN_Dn #Immersive #VR #innovation #webinar

Delighted to share this trailer of Dementia The Musical, which is currently touring theatre venues across Scotland, supported by the Creative Scotland touring fund. Written by Ron Coleman, a person living with dementia, music by Sophie Bancroft, under my direction. The world premiere of this important piece took place last weekend at Capital Theatres in Edinburgh, with real life dementia activists James McKillop, Agnes Houston and Nancy McAdam in attendance. Please watch and share, or even better - come and see!

Really chuffed to be able to finally share the film we, Neon8 made for Children 1st' and Ardroy Education Centre's 'Bide Oot' project. I filmed families at Ardroy in Lochgoilhead last year. Children 1st hired us to make this as a fresh replacement for the 1st film of the pilot project, made in 2019. The 1st film helped them secure 3 years funding for the project, which we were delighted with. This film shows how Bide Oot has evolved into a Scotland-wide initiative and hopefully contines long into the future, with the help of the film. I'm now into my third week on Substack and just published my third post. This one’s all about feeling small, how that affects and shapes adult life. Some supporting bonus content in the form of Mangomad’s ‘I am Tram’. A track Kelman produced at the end of the noughties and featuring the unmistakeable words and timbre of the late Alan Watts. Here's a snippet and the link to Kelman's 2nd part of his 'Jumping Ship' blog. #vr #vr180 #canon #lumix #videoproduction The Great Reset Neon8 invested in VR180 kit in early 2020 – just as Covid wreaked havoc on the world. I’d wanted to try VR filmmaking for quite a while, but when I first looked in 2016, the costs were too much to justify the outlay. By 2020, VR180 was one of the newer formats on the block, and although cameras were pricey for a microbusiness, they were much more affordable for us. Thankfully we kept working during Covid as lots of people needed videos and editing of self-made content to communicate with the world. We were lucky. So, here we were. We had our Panasonic Lumix cameras for regular films and Z Cams for our VR180 endeavours. It was all quite neat. That was until… Enter, The Canon Ball Then came Canon’s announcement of their RF Dual Fisheye 5.2mm lens in 2022. A VR180 lens designed to work on their flagship (at the time) mirrorless hybrid camera, the EOS R5. I have to say, I felt a great amount of joy with this announcement – not because I wanted the kit, which clearly I did – but because I felt justified in our decision to go two-footed into VR180...

Most days, as a small (tiny) business, you feel you're sailing against an insurmountable tide. Especially when your business is about incorporating the world of new technology into a beloved, traditional suite of live art/culture. Then SOME days you are at the Houses of Parliament showcasing the potential of VR film at the kind invitation of The Space (Digital Arts) and Arts Council England sharing your work with Lords, ACE Chair and CEO (see Baron Parkinson enjoying Arthur Pita's Little Match Girl filmed at Sadler's Wells and the Daniel Lismore exhibition short VR film for Digital Spaces..)you're a highlight of the event alongside an actual Lowry painting, painstakingly transported down south and into the building. And then you have wind in the sails to continue. Onwards. Neon8 #vr180 #vrfilm #vrtheatre #digitaltheatre #digital

Here's a wee snippet and link to Kelman's latest blog post. What started out as an idea to talk about the differences between using Canon and Panasonic cameras for our video production, became more about Jumping Ship from a career and creative technology point of view. In one Gear and Out the Other It’s a big decision for any filmmaker or production company to switch camera systems. Mostly, you are buying into a new ecosystem which requires a complete rebuild; from camera bodies to lenses and potentially some software investment, unless you’re loaded, it’s not something to take lightly. So, in 2022, I was faced with this predicament when Canon unexpectedly released the RF Dual Fisheye 5.2mm lens. My company, Neon8, had already invested in the Z Cam VR180 cameras for our VR video work, but this release got me dreaming of a more pleasing convergence of kit. I could use the same camera bodies for regular film and VR film as well as pro quality stills. Wow! This ‘singularity’ became a bit of an obsession. I was lucky enough to receive the Canon R5 and the Dual Fisheye lens to test drive from Canon UK. It’s fair to say, it took a bit of getting used to. I’d used a Canon 5D MkII previously, but only for a short while and I admit, I found it very clunky for video compared to my trusty Panasonic cameras. So, I had never considered switching systems until this point. This potential camera system switch, for me, was as monumental as the career switch which got me into filmmaking. Going into the unknown is always a risk... https://lnkd.in/ec-DJzEg #canonuk #panasonic #lumix #zcam #izugar #microfourthirds #VR180 #audioproduction #VJ #changingcareer #creativindustries
