10 years ago, Steve was homeless and suffering from drug addiction. Having learnt furniture restoration in rehab, he was able to turn his negative habits into positive ones and dedicated his time to perfecting his new craft. Today, he’s the proud of a furniture restoration shop, Restored Retro, in Poole, Dorset – and that’s in part thanks to your pension investments. Through our partnership with Legal & General, we’ve invested some of your pension savings into property projects across the UK, including an initiative to help revitalise Poole’s high street. Steve is one of 10 entrepreneurs that were given the opportunity to set up a shop in the town centre. We sat down with Steve, to hear more about his story and how getting into furniture restoration has changed his life.
About us
Nest is a great UK success story. Established in 2010, Nest is a critical pillar of the Government’s automatic enrolment programme, with a public service obligation (PSO) to accept any employer wishing to use the scheme to discharge their automatic enrolment duties. From a standing start, we have delivered a high quality, low cost pension scheme open to all, which has not only delivered on its mission, but has also helped to drive up standards and best practice across the industry. Now with over 12 million members and well over half a million participating employers, Nest is playing a critical role in helping people save for their retirement - many of them low to moderate earners who may be saving for the first time, and moving jobs frequently. Nest now occupies an important place in the pensions market and will deliver high quality pensions to mass market consumers for many years to come, leveraging its scale to deliver value through the combination of low costs, market leading investment solutions and modernised services all overseen by strong Trustee governance.

Natural capital is the economic term used for natural assets and biodiversity, which includes soil, air, water, forests and all livings things. A healthy natural environment is key for healthy societies and economies. As a society, we must manage the impact of drivers affecting nature loss, such as habitat changes, invasive species, overexploitation of resources, pollution/nutrient loading, and climate change. At Nest, we’re gaining a good understanding of where natural capital risks lie within our portfolio so those risks can be managed. We’ve set an ambition to align our investment portfolio with limiting global warming to 1.5C by reaching net zero emissions across our portfolio by 2050 at the latest. This is aligned with the commitment made by governments across the world through the Paris Agreement, and consistent with the UK’s legislated target of net zero emissions by 2050. To achieve this long-term goal, we have set several short and medium-term targets, as you can see in our graphic below. We are regularly reviewing our climate change policy and roadmap and will publish new targets if we make any changes. Our investment policy ensures that we manage any investments for our members to try to minimise any risks in transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
