  • Great article on Positivity and Ambition Our relationship with the Scottish Business Network community has been critical to establishing, developing and now growing Net Zero Nation. We look forward to being beneficiaries and supporters of the next stage of the development of SBN. As together we face the battle to address Climate Change maintaining a belief that we can overcome this challenge is critically important. #NetZero #Climate Change #ScotlandIsNow

I chose to be positive Yesterday I was told that my "positivity" and "belief" in what can be achieved is my greatest asset. A lovely comment to be sure and one I am delighted to accept. But can I share a secret, I am not a naturally positive person. In any new activity, I see the potential problems, understand the challenges ahead, and feel the fear of "doing something" new. It would be so easy to "pass", to curl up on the couch, to "not bother" to listen to the negative voices. But, my curiosity, my desire to help others, my "purpose on this planet" kicks in and I take the first steps on a new venture. I feel the fear, I understand the risks but I proceed because I know in my heart (and after much discussion with trusted advisers) that this is the right thing to do. In January we will announce the most significant expansion to the services, capabilities and goals of Scottish Business Network as we transform our organisation. Over the last six months I, with the support of an army of volunteers have been involved in an exercise to challenge what we can achieve, raise our ambition and design a plan to deliver this. We have reviewed what initiatives have worked as we engage with the global Scottish family and which have not, what opportunities we see on the horizon and how we can capitalise on these while managing the risks and challenges. When I think of what comes next I hear the words of US President Robert F. Kennedy" from 1962 "𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧. 𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐭𝐨𝐨." We will not go to the moon but we will take on the next phase of our development understanding that it will be hard, and challenging but that the goal is worthy of our ambition. I look forward to sharing our plans with you and hope you will join us on this mission.

Circularity makes good business sense not just good sustainability sense. That's not just our view but that of a report published by the World Economic Forum yesterday. Our stat 🔢 of the day is taken from this report: ⚡ 𝟑% of businesses pursue circular solutions for sustainability reasons only ⚡ 𝟗𝟕% of businesses pursue circular solutions for a broad set of reasons that include sustainability but also profitability and resilience. ----------------------- CIRCULARITY CAN BE APPLIED AT ANY LEVEL, BY ANYONE ------ Yesterday also saw the announcement of a new Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Circular Economy Taskforce for England which has been tasked with designing the first English strategy to begin the transition to a circular economy to: ✔️ Support economic growth ✔️ Create green jobs ✔️ Promote efficient and productive use of resources ✔️ Accelerate the transition to net zero emissions. Whilst the development of a national strategy is to be very much lauded, there are many different ways in which circularity can be applied effectively and independently. Even within our team at Sustainability Connects we have people who have delivered a wide range of impactful circularity projects, programmes and initiatives across the last 30 years and at many different levels: At a NATION level ------ ⚡ The development and implementation of the UK's first national circularity programme - NISP At a ISLAND/RURAL COMMUNITY level ------ ⚡ The development and implementation of circularity programmes designed specifically for islands including the Isle of Man At a CITY level ------ ⚡ The development of city wide local circularity networks including businesses like the EICC, local universities, local community groups and NGOs At an ACADEMIC level ------ ⚡ Our team have developed and delivered lectures, led projects and workshops for universities and university students on circularity including Edinburgh College of Art At an ORGANISATIONAL level ------ ⚡ Being responsible for creating the McLaren Racing's circularity moonshot programme to develop the world's first fully circular racing car At a SCHOOL level ------ ⚡ Setting up school circularity initiatives to recycle, reuse and replace art materials for design and craft led activities. All of the above have had impact and left a meaningful legacy - and that's just our team. Big or small, there are many projects that we all can get involved with. It takes a little time, a little imagination and a lot of cooperation and communication - but the rewards can be HUGE. What impact on circularity are you making - we'd love to learn more about your innovative work in the comments below. Sustainability Connects . . . . One step closer to a circular economy in Scotland! Today The Scottish Government has launched the final version of Scotland’s Circular Economy and Waste Route Map. We’re delighted that the announcement was made at one of our members, Grassmarket Community Project in Edinburgh, by the Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy Ms. Gillian Martin. She said: “Reusing and recycling materials has a huge role to play in Scotland’s response to tackling the climate crisis. “We must make the circular option, where we value materials and keep them in use for as long as possible, either in their original form or recycled, an easier choice for Scottish households, businesses and the public sector.” On behalf of our members, Circular Communities Scotland welcomes these updates to the Waste Route Map. We look forward to reviewing the amendments in detail and sharing our thoughts on its potential impact for our sector in the New Year.
