Two REALLY BIG headline stats 🔢 came out of the United Nations COP16Riyadh yesterday . . . . . 1️⃣ The world needs 𝗨𝗦$𝟭 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 daily to combat desertification, land degradation and drought between 2025 and 2030 2️⃣ This amount is the same total investment required for annual spending on environmentally harmful subsidies - 𝗨𝗦$𝟮.𝟲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. Really makes you pause . . . . and then think what might be and could be possible if you could just slide those figures which are on the table from one camp to the next - with no need for additional funds to be found, we would have a potential solution to a devastating problem - simple? Hmmmm - if only. ---------------------- AGRI-FOOD SYSTEMS DAY + THE PRICE SURGE OF COCOA Here at Riyadh, it was Agri-food systems day where a clear and key message was being made around vulnerability and interconnection between our land degradation and direct human impact and consequence. ⚡ 𝟰𝟬% of the world’s land is degraded, affecting over 3.2 billion people, with the highest costs borne by those can least afford it – indigenous communities, rural households, smallholder farmers, and especially youth and women. ⚡ Without urgent financial support, socio-economic impacts of land degradation will deepen, driving instability and forced migration. ⚡ Crop yields could decline by up to 𝟱𝟬% in some regions by 2050, driving food prices up by 𝟯𝟬% and intensifying food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable areas. Africa in particular stands at the crossroads. A coincidence, but as this messaging was coming out of COP, the Financial Times were running a headline that the price of cocoa is set for a significant price surge. ⚡ The FT reported that there is a prospect of a multiyear supply-demand deficit in cocoa beans will mean much higher prices are coming. ⚡ The FT further highlighted that this shortfall is attributed to a 𝟭𝟯% 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗮 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁 due to much weaker production in Ivory Coast and Ghana — responsible for more than 𝟱𝟬% of the world’s production. ⚡ The primary reason for this poor harvest . . . . CLIMATE CHANGE. We have all the evidence we need in front of us - we see, hear and experience daily reminders - real social and societal ones, environmental ones and economic ones. This report on cocoa is not in isolation - it only highlights what has been going on, what will continue to go on and will get worse - impacting our health, our wealth, our well being, our planet and our generations to come.
