New Future Construction CBS

Technical and Vocational Training

Vocational training platform to facilitate a de-carbonised, bio-based and circular material culture in construction.

About us

New Future Construction aims to facilitate the environmental, social and economic resilience required to meet the emerging challenges of our time. We strive to be an industry leading vocational training platform, developed to equip future construction sector professionals with the ability to act as agents of sustainable change and transformation. The climate crisis is not only an environmental issue but also one of social, economic and public health, which affects world’s population in the broadest sense. We believe that making a connection between education and practice in the use of sustainable and natural building materials, together with techniques for retrofitting our buildings and homes, has the potential to act as a catalyst in the acceleration towards a more equitable and environmentally sustainable future. New Future Construction endeavours to be a porous educational facility where community engagement and provision of routes into education and employment hold significant benefit for the east end of Glasgow and beyond. Through the scaling up of sustainable construction and retrofit skills, NFCS will; - help deliver construction workforce required within the industry to meet the Scottish Government target of net zero by 2045. - provide a centre for information for local and city-wide communities to; promote climate literacy; promote the adoption of renewable technologies; promote the benefit of retrofit in decreasing direct energy costs for residents; accelerate the pace of the decarbonisation of society; and tackle the climate crisis via improvements in our built environment. Whilst initially operating with and through the construction sector community of Glasgow, we hope to extend the geographic focus of our activity across the whole of the UK.

  • This is an incredibly important piece of work which we would urge everyone in the built environment sector to engage with. The planning system holds such opportunity to help move us towards a decarbonised built environment - it urgently needs to adapt and be utilised to its full potential!

“The planning system could be like a sealed vessel through which we measure carbon emissions, but currently it acts more like a colander ...” #PlanningPolicy is uniquely placed to contribute to the UK’s #NetZero targets. Local plans — the rules and regulations regarding development in a specific area — could require all construction to be low carbon and climate resilient. So, why don’t they? Here, CSE’s Daniel Stone and Neil Best MRTPI share how their research with Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) for the Climate Change Committee uncovered a huge gulf between spatial planning policy and the UK's net zero goals. Prefabricated Building with Natural Materials Monday 13th May 19:00 BST 🏗 The ACAN #NaturalMaterials Group is delighted to welcome Craig White, Barbara Jones and Will Kirkman, experts in building with natural materials. They will discuss the prefabricated systems that they work with, with examples from across the UK and Europe. The presentations will be followed by a live Q&A. This event is FREE to attend, however donations are welcomed to support ACAN actions. 🌱Craig White: Craig is CEO at Agile Homes. Agile delivers low-carbon, affordable homes to those in housing need using low-carbon, modern methods of construction, built and scaled at pace. Agile is helping to solve the housing crisis, using a land-supply that is new, free & hidden in plain sight. The climate emergency drives Agile’s design and development of its products and services, to ensure that operational energy and embodied carbon is minimised and that only natural and renewable, carbon capturing materials are used in the fabric of its build systems. 🌱 Barbara Jones: Barbara is the founder of The School of Natural Building, and the UK’s preeminent straw-bale building authority. She has decades of experience with straw bale building, clay and lime plastering, building physics and leading work on building sites across the UK and Europe. Barbara set up Straw Works, now Wellspring Architecture, which is a bespoke design company specialising in buildings made of straw and other healthy natural materials. Barbara is now a technical consultant at EcoCocon, an innovative wall system making the best of natural materials while ensuring healthy, comfortable, and energy-efficient living at the same time. 🌱 Will Kirkman: Will is the managing director of Ecomerchant, a business specialised in sustainable and natural building materials for the building trade and consumers. He recently set up We Build Eco a building company producing energy-efficient building kits from any design with a fast and precise process. Their kits are easy to assemble, and the buildings are natural, healthy and sustainable. Book your space now via the link in our comment!

  • First Minister Humza Yousaf visited BE-ST’s Innovation Campus today to announce the Scottish Funding Council's future approach to investing in Scotland’s innovation centres and to officially open BE-ST's National Retrofit Centre of Excellence. Stephen Good, CEO of BE-ST, said: “It was an honour to welcome the First Minister to BE-ST today and to be able to showcase the work we do every day and how far we have come since we were initially funded by the SFC back in 2014. After starting with an empty factory space, opening the National Retrofit Centre of Excellence today was a huge milestone in BE-ST's journey and the forthcoming SFC funding will only go to supercharge the delivery of an active skills programme in this space.
