Material Index #Deconstruction #Auditing #Insights: Each building or site we work with presents a chance to develop and work with new #innovative technologies….or visit the archives. I’ve been to a few talks recently (Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), #ASBP) that highlight the barriers and lack of accessibility in building #data. Often, key record information and component data is stored in complex software or models (for newer schemes), or hidden within archival information (older buildings). As most of our #audit team have architectural training we are fluent in most BIM softwares (Autodesk Revit, #Rhino, Matterport, #Pointcloud etc.) and are passionate about detail. We enjoy reviewing building information thoroughly and pairing this with our own insights gained from our detailed site survey using the Material Index Platform. Recently with our clients we have: 🔢 Scheduled material quantities from Revit models with demolition phasing.  🏗️ Used Matterport scans to supplement site data capture, access restricted areas and remote sites. 📐 Conducted in-depth analysis of archival drawings to produce structural estimations. Our Material Index Platform is the easy to use interface that stores all this information in one place. The data is stored in an accessible format (no software skills required!) and brings all stakeholders together, ultimately increasing reuse across projects. Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) hosted a thrilling webinar diving into the nuance of paint. More specifically the concern of how we see it, use it and dispose/reuse it. It was disappointing to find out how much paint impacts the environment after understanding how much plastic is present in conventional paint. Dr Timothy Meek spoke wonderfully about the future of buildings and how modern day plastic paints will not adapt to climate change. He mentions of transitioning to natural methods, and back to European architecture facades which never used paint to begin with. I agree with him in suggesting to go back full circle, and back to materials we now see as 'old' and 'obsolete'. I was pleasantly surprised to also find out their are grassroots movements to mitigate this impact by going to natural paint compounds and pigments instead of the plastics we use too commonly. Anton Boekhoudt spoke for KEIM UK, who provide this solution by using only natural binders, pigments and compounds that allow breath-ability. A perfect solution that is future proof but still needs regulation and policy backing to make it more common place in the industry.
