  • Anna had the task of making a complicated journey through the Judicial System into something that could be easily digested by a wide audience. Take a look at what she did. Being able to simplify something complex is a real skill. At New Possibilities we find that we can take a step back and see the key messages that people who are immersed in the service, project, or programme can't because they are too close into it. If you find you get bogged down in the detail that it's difficult to work out how to communicate in an accessible way why not get in touch - we can help!

MAPPING OUT COMPLEXITY During last year I worked with a research team, commissioned by NHS England. They had the task of developing a comprehensive pathway of good practice for children and adults with learning disabilities and or autism who find themselves in the Criminal Justice System.   To say it was complicated would be an understatement!  From the research that had been undertaken it was clear that there was no consistency in the support that was available. Neither children and adults were sure what their journey through the system would look like. Staff did not have the tools or knowledge to give people the information they needed to be able to make sense of what would happen next. I had the task of trying to make sense of all of this information and produce on one page, a visual summary that could be used as a guide and help people understand what they should expect from services provided in the Criminal Justice System.   It can be important to simplify and distil the complexity of a system into a single relatable image. This reduces the effort it takes the brain to make sense of information. It makes it easier to understand. Having information and knowledge in a more accessible format is empowering for individuals. If you are trying to work out how to make the 'complicated' more engaging, more memorable, then get in touch I'm taking on commissions for 2025. #visualpractice #visualpractitioner #visualsummaries #visualstorytelling #visualsynthesis #visualcommunication #newpossibilities #autism #learningdisability #criminaljustice #simplifycomplexity

USING COLOUR If you know me, you know I LOVE colour! Over the past year, I’ve been exploring how I use it, and I wanted to share two examples. In the first, I used lots of different colours because the logo had many colours, and we were celebrating multiple projects. This approach added energy and helped provide clarity. In the second, I focused on shades of two colours—orange and blue—taken from the logo. I used bold colour blocks to separate personal stories and left other areas plain to emphasize key messages and learning. What’s my takeaway? Whether you use a lot of colours or just a lot of colour, both can be impactful when used intentionally to create meaning. https://lnkd.in/e6zTBM3v

  • Why are visual metaphors so powerful? There are lots of reasons and here are are a couple for you to think about. Visual metaphors can tap into the brain’s natural ability to recognize patterns, draw connections, and process information. They translate abstract ideas into concrete, familiar images, making them easier to understand. Visual metaphors often engage emotions by connecting ideas to experiences, memories, or feelings. Eddy’s work, being celebrated below, is a great example of this. It helps the audience relate to the message more deeply. Which means that the content is more memorable. So visual metaphors that resonate are more likely to stick in a person’s mind. Do you have some abstract, complex information that you need to make more accessible to a wider audience? Why not get in touch and see how we can help.

  • This was an incredible celebration of fabulous co-production work with such variety in projects capturing the very personal lived experience along with academics and researchers all demonstrating how true co-production produces better outcomes for people. Anna worked remotely, setting up with studio lighting and centring her mobile device on the paper canvas, which meant she was able to share the developing record live. The screen could then be be used as a spotlight during breaks and at the end of the session. This allows delegates to interact with the visual record just as they would if they were in the room. This offer brings a different dynamic to online events. If you’d like to add a bit of something different to your online events that not only adds interest during the event, it provides a visual summary on a page post event. Thanks to the Co-Production Collective, UCL and team, particularly Niccola Hutchinson-Pascal Aleem Nisar Vanessa Bennett for making this a smooth experience at my end.

Last year I was involved in a couple of workshops focused on capturing the voice of parents of autistic children. I found listening to their experiences shocking. To hear the impact that the health, education and care system has had on whole families it is little wonder that any trust they had in the system has been decimated. The 2 groups were focussing on #coproducing #recommendations to feed into the final report, to begin to repair the damage caused. • Great to see that 18 months on these visual minutes, created at citizen engagement events, are still having an impact. If you need to capture the voices of people who will be effected by service development, strategic growth, imposed decision making processes, then get in touch. It’s what we do best.

  • What a amazing achievement Gill and Florence: To have influenced the conversations and built a community of passionate committed practitioners, commissioners and leaders with clinical and lived experience is truly inspirational. I am honoured and privileged to have supported your work; both through visually capturing the conversations and facilitating workshops over the last 10 years. Here’s to the next decade 🎉. I’m hopeful that those conversations will deepened the resolve to ensure that every woman has a birth experience that is personalised and supports a healthy and positive outcome. I’m sure Carrie Lewis MIoL would agree. New Possibilites has been on this journey and witnessed some incredible conversations that have been transformational in the way maternity services have developed over the years.

BRAND NEW FILM 📽️ 10 Years of #MatExp - 2014 to 2024 – the zesty story 🍋🍋🍋 https://lnkd.in/ej7G5DCw Thank you to those who were able to join us for our online #10YearsOfMatExp party! 🎉 🙌 🥳 🍰 What an extraordinary celebration!! There is massive FOMO amongst those who were unable to attend, so we're delighted to share this film 📽️ of the event. We brought together some of our movers and shakers to celebrate 10 YEARS of our collaborative, influential #MatExp #WhoseShoes (#maternity experience) campaign. Parents, midwives, obstetricians, paediatricians, creatives, national and international leaders … and more! The challenge? 🤔 To capture the vibrant, action-focused spirit of the #MatExp campaign in an online lunchtime event, whilst giving people time and space to connect, celebrate and share their own highlights! 😎 We were so pleased we took time out to #StopNCelebrate!! It was fascinating to look back and reflect on the last 10 years with #FabObs Florence Wilcock and with a wonderful visual record created live by Anna Geyer. If you'd asked us 10 years ago whether we expected the #MatExp ‘Whose Shoes?’ campaign to be going strong in 2024, I guess we would have hoped it would not be needed. We would have hoped that the things that we were campaigning for – listening to women and families, good communication, people able to speak out safely and more, would have been a given. It was very moving to hear what the #MatExp campaign has meant to people and there are many opportunities for you to keep adding your own highlights. Working in maternity services can be very tough at the moment, with so many distressing reports and so many pressures. So it was lovely to see people reconnecting and being energised. Yvonne Newbold MBE helped us all share our #maternity hopes for the future. We are now crowdsourcing even more stories of what has been achieved by so many passionate people dedicated to positive change, so check out our Sandbox and Fab NHS Stuff collection. https://lnkd.in/eXtjJ8Gx Do you take time out to #StopNCelebrate the good stuff? We're glad we did. 🍋🍋🍋 Huge thanks to those of you who have been, and continue to be, part of this fascinating and very important journey. joanne minford Mary Salama Carrie Lewis MIoL Ann Remmers Nisha Khot Rosie Murphy Manjit Roseghini Gaynor Armstrong Sarah Winfield Tom Holliday Lyse Edwards James Mountford Bob Klaber Deepa "The Desi Midwife" Kate Greenstock Emma Jane Cushnan Catherine MacLennan Helen Calvert Leigh Kendall FRSA, MCIPR, Leanne Howlett Lesley Page CBE Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent OBE Julia Cumberlege Sarah-Jane Marsh Linda Soars Nicki Macklin Professor Catherine Crock AM FRACP(Hon) FRACMA (Hon) Sarah-Jane Pedler Sarah McBride Melissa Davis Dr Jane Mischenko Rachel Collum Terri Porrett +++++++!!!!! #coproduction

  • It is not often that as a visual practitioner I get to hear about what happens to a visual record after the event. I'm blown away by Wendy's write up here as not only does it beautifully summarise Sandwell Council's Modern Slavery Summit it give a clear and concise call to action for us all. https://lnkd.in/eanX_jy4

  • It is always great to support organisations in communicating important messages about how to improve the experience of people who use/recieve services. This is no exception. Carrie Lewis MIoL’s work with The PSC demonstrates the value of capturing events in a visual record created live at an event.

World Mental Health Day 2024: prioritising the mental health of ward staff Today is World Mental Health Day! As part of this year’s theme — prioritising mental health in the workplace — we are spotlighting NHS England’s Culture of Care Programme. The Culture of Care Programme centres on the twelve Culture of Care commitments for mental health inpatient care. These co-produced commitments and their associated standards represent the collective vision for inpatient services across the country and reflect the potential for change across all services. The PSC is honoured to be one of the Culture of Care Programme's partners for the Staff Care and Development strand, alongside Virginia Mason Institute, Imroc, The Institute of Group Analysis, and InHealth Associates. Our work brings together participating wards (including frontline staff, experts by experience, and ward managers) to support teams in developing their cultures so that people on the ward feel safe and cared for. We are focusing on expanding self-awareness and building teams' skills in delivering high-trust, therapeutic relationship-focused care. 👉 Click here to learn more about the Culture of Care Programme: https://lnkd.in/en69vmfC Together, let's build an NHS workplace culture that prioritises mental health and transforms patient care! 💪 Image credit: Carrie Lewis MIoL #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealth #NHS #Teamwork
