Concluding a fantastic year at NWBLT, we were joined by NWBLT members, and those who are part of our Rising Stars and Diversity Drivers - our regions leaders both today and tomorrow - for our drinks reception at the Portico Library. We also welcomed partners, local leaders from across the public and private sector, all of whom help to shape and deliver on our mission; for the North West to be the best place to live, to work and to do good business. Our CEO Emma Degg MBE FRSA reflected on the year gone by and extended our thanks to our members, whose contributions are essential to our success and to the success of our region.

Congratulations to everyone at Agent Academy, and in particular to NWBLT member Paul Corcoran who took the leap 10 years ago and should be very proud of everything that Agent Academy has achieved. We are delighted to announce the appointment of two new members, further strengthening the team to help support our mission to help make the North West the best place to live, to work and to do good business. Khurram Hussain is Partner at Warren Partners | Certified B Corp and has a track record of working with a range of organisations from FTSE 100 through to high growth, disruptive and founder-led entrepreneurial businesses, and regional and national public sector Boards. With a focus on main board (Chair and NED) and executive (CEO, CFO, CTO/CIO) appointments, Khurram’s clients span the not-for-profit, technology, media, property and healthcare sectors with particular strength in supporting organisations undergoing transformational change or a large-scale Board refresh/rebuild. The breadth of his client base connects him to a diverse and varied network of talent, from which Khurram is skilled at identifying and engaging highly talented executives with the ability to transform businesses in the UK and internationally. Khurram is a dedicated champion for diversity and has been closely involved with the launch and development of the Warren Partners Board Fellowship Programme which has focussed on improving the diversity of FTSE 250 Boards and is now also impacting on Boards outside the listed space. He has been involved with the North West Business Leadership Team Diversity Drivers group, a group championing ethnic diversity in the North West of England, since its formation in February 2021 and was appointed Deputy Chair in January 2023. Joining Khurram as a new member of the NWBLT is Tom Bridgford. A solicitor with more than 30 years’ experience, he is currently Partner, Head of US Sales Team and Head of Outsourcing (International) at Eversheds Sutherland. Born and brought up in Cheshire, he trained and became a partner at City firm Macfarlanes before returning to the North West in 2003. His specialty is in high-value commercial contracts, outsourcing, IT procurement, manufacturing, supply chain, distribution and agency agreements, as well as in franchising and IP licensing/exploitation deals. He is client partner for several of the firm’s biggest and most high-profile global businesses, particularly in the life sciences and technology sectors. Tom is also a member of the Legal 500 Hall of Fame, and through his role on the Eversheds Sutherland US Sales Team which takes him to America several times a year, his focus is on attracting and developing global client work for the region. Simone Peppi, Chair of the NWBLT, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Khurram and Tom to the team. Their strategic knowledge in sectors which operate across the region combined with their high-profile experience will be vital for the team’s work in supporting economic growth in the North West. We are excited for their contributions and their positive impact as they join our mission to drive economic growth and prosperity in the region”

For NWBLT’s last meeting of the year, we welcomed Julia Sutcliffe Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Business and Trade. Julia discussed the Government’s focus on collaboration, innovation and regional growth and how we can work together to drive change. Kindly hosted by Manchester Airport, we heard from NWBLT’s Chris Woodroofe on the exciting developments at the airport and the continued growth in passenger numbers – driving economic benefit for the whole region. All of our meetings provide an opportunity for members to hear from each other as part of our ‘state of trade’, and members benefited from frank and honest discussion of the issues and impacts on different sectors from both the budget and the wider geopolitical backdrop.

Great to see our Deputy CEO on a panel at the Young Enterprise UK event in Manchester...
Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the North West Business Leadership Team and Member of the NWBLT Rising Stars
Yesterday I attended the Northern leg of the Young Enterprise UK #teacherconference in Manchester. It was a fascinating event which highlighted some of the fantastic work YE do and featured case studies from a variety of schools from across the North. It was eye opening to sit across the table from teachers who have the responsibility for careers and get an understanding of the issues they are faced with. Lou Cordwell OBE joined in the afternoon to give a keynote address about innovation and inspired everyone in the room with her message about the future for our young people. I then joined a panel to talk about what businesses were looking for in the young people they employ. My fellow panelists were from the world of education or provided support for schools - it was really interesting to hear their views of the links needed between education and business. Thanks Vivien Couche for the invitation to attend and be on the afternoon panel. Look forward to doing more work with YE. Emily Mathew (She/Her) you were missed but we have some interesting opportunities to get more involved with YE which you will hear about on your return to the office!

This week saw the third and final workshop as part of our joint project with North West Regional Forum of The Productivity Institute - Delivering a Step Change. The session focused on developing the ‘success scenario’ worked up through the first two workshops. The aim of the project is to use success scenarios to help paint a picture of what good looks like and what a successful, productive north west region could look like in 2040. We had fantastic discussions and activities to ’back cast’ - working back from 2040 to consider some of the key stages and changes that would need to be in place to enable that success. Huge thanks to Alliance Manchester Business School for hosting, Kieron Flanagan from The University of Manchester for his expertise and guidance through the project and the brilliant team from North West Business Leadership Team member Accenture for facilitating the sessions! We aim to complete and publish the final report and recommendations in January 2025 as part of Productivity Week so watch this space…!
