We provide #localgov services across North Yorkshire, England's largest rural county.

About us

North Yorkshire Council is responsible for delivering a wide range of local government services across England's largest rural county. We're responsible for education, social care, health, highways, libraries, trading standards and household waste recycling centres as well as hundreds of other services to a population of circa 600,000 residents. Our residents are represented by 72 elected members and the council is Conservative controlled. We are on a journey of change and modernisation over the next five years, changing the ways that we engage with the public and the ways that we work with communities in general. Whilst the challenges ahead are not to be under-estimated, there will be positive opportunities to be more efficient, to do many things better and smarter than we have before and ways of working that are better for our service areas. As we shape the organisation of the future, we will do so around core principles including: • Putting customers at the heart of all we do • Enabling stronger communities • Working in partnership • Ensuring value for money • Valuing and investing in staff • Being an innovative and learning organisation We've got over 20,000 members of staff who work in a wide range of roles and we are one of North Yorkshire's leading employers. Take a trip down memory lane with five bespoke 2025 calendars. Library staff and volunteers have sifted through their favourite archive images to create the calendars with well-known landmarks in areas around Harrogate, Ripon, Great Ayton, Skipton, Pickering and Malton. The photos, which date from the late 19th century to the 1970s, demonstrate how these places have changed over the years, and how elements remain the same. The calendars are on sale at the individual libraries, with all proceeds invested into maintaining the service. To read more visit https://lnkd.in/egPxRCge

A drive to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in rural areas is to be rolled out to another of North Yorkshire’s tourist hotspots. Project Spotlight was launched in Harrogate earlier this year to help make the town centre even safer, focusing on anti-social behaviour, street crime and retail theft. Following its success, the initiative was then adapted for The Falls and Batts area of Richmond with North Yorkshire Council working alongside the Richmondshire Community Safety Hub, North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. Now, attention is to be focused on the Osmotherley and Cod Beck area of the county, a popular area for visitors due to the nearby reservoir. Find out more, at https://lnkd.in/emY2dt_J

Care leavers have spoken of their gratitude for the love and support they have received in North Yorkshire as their own resilience, strength of character, and achievements have been honoured. A ceremony was held recently at the University of York to mark the personal growth and recognise the achievements of care leavers who are taking the next steps in their lives. The care leavers event, which is now in its sixth year, saw more than 50 young people joined by officers from our children and young people’s service and members of the county’s business community not only celebrate the care leavers’ success, but also speak about the barriers they face and share ideas and their experiences. Hannah Halliwell, now 22, who was under our care, is now working as a buying assistant having achieved a first-class degree from the Manchester Fashion Institute. She said: “I am where I am today because of the constant support I received from North Yorkshire Council and I’ll always be thankful of that.” Find out more at https://lnkd.in/eB4qvjEY
