  • AUDIT & AUDIT COMMITTEES! A great discussion last night by a superb panel - as well as open floor Q&A with CFOs and FDs across a range of industries. Sarah Wilson, an experienced Audit Partner at Gravita brought practical advice around planning, timing, consideration on areas of judgement, managing the team. And lived up to her reputation of being the most passionate person in audit! An audit process doesn’t have to be painful - and our panel shared practical examples of where things can go wrong, and how to avoid them. Jake Barton, an experienced CFO with insight into Media and Professional Services, share his thoughts around where CFOs could make sure even in an SME or smaller company, good governance and process should be in place, and that building strong stakeholder relationships and ensuring engagement of your Board is important. We also highlighted that whilst obvious, as a CFO, it’s imperative you and your team are all over the numbers, the narrative, the key themes and are engaging the auditors early in planning. Shaun Smith joined us, sharing his years of experience as both a CFO, a Non Executive Director and an Audit Committee Chair. His thoughts around what makes an effective Audit Committee and then an effective Chair were fascinating - and a lot of notes were made, followed by some great in depth conversation after the panel. A Key Takeaway was about formalising the role of that committee in that organisation (Terms of Reference), and ensuring all members understand its purpose and hence the role they play. The conversation continued long after the panel end! Thank you to Gravita for your hospitality, and to our Members for being as engaging as always. If you missed the session, we will look to hold one virtually - please drop us a line at info@novacommunity.co.uk Billie O'Connor Charleigh Burroughs Elli Karavia
