🌍 COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, showcased steps forward in climate action but left critical gaps unresolved. 💰 Climate Finance: A $300 billion annual pledge by 2035 aims to close funding gaps, with simplified access and tracking mechanisms. However, it falls short of the $1.3 trillion needed annually and relies heavily on loans, raising debt concerns. 🔥 Loss & Damage Fund: Pledged $759 million annually—well below the $580 billion required—raising concerns about fair distribution. 🌱 Carbon Trading: Rules under Articles 6.2 and 6.4 introduced stronger safeguards for international carbon markets, but operational clarity and offset quality remain issues. 🌐 Higher Targets: Nations like the UK set ambitious goals, but detailed implementation plans and fossil fuel phase-out strategies are missing. 🇬🇧 UK’s Ambitious Targets: The UK pledged an 81% emissions cut by 2035, launched a $75 billion Climate Investment Fund mechanism, and co-led the Global Clean Power Alliance, reinforcing its leadership in clean energy innovation. 🔜 Next Steps: COP30 in Belém, Brazil, will focus on bridging climate finance gaps, strengthening NDCs, phasing out fossil fuels, and addressing the Amazon’s critical role in climate stability. 🍀 Thank you to everyone who attended the event co-organised by Mitie and NovAzure: Key Takeaways from COP29: Delivering on 2030 Net Zero Targets. 🗣️ After an introduction by Alex Avila to set the scene, our MD Jean-Jacques Jouanna gave a keynote on reflections on COP29 takeaway, putting in perspective the COP journey since inception.  💡 🌿 It was followed by a very insightful and thought provoking panel discussion on what it means to achieve Net Zero by 2030 with Jonathan Tudor (Clean Growth Fund), Eleni Polychroniadou (Sintali), Matthew Ward (Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)), Ian Lane (NATS), expertly facilitated by Parth Mehta.
