The replacement of 10,000 Georgian glass roof panels over an area of two football pitches at Waterloo Station has demanded some innovative temporary works to avoid disruption to the millions of passengers who pass through the station every year. When you take your roof off it lets the rain in, and when it rains 110 days a year in London that means a lot of rainwater must be captured, diverted, and channeled away from the operational station, the concourse, escalators, stairways, platforms and retail units. The Octavius solution for Waterloo incorporates a temporary external roof structure positioned over the current station to keep the weather elements out and direct rainwater away and into catchment systems as well as incorporate an enclosed working platform to access and replace the existing glass panels. The work is being completed in phases therefore the working platform and protective roof structure must be progressively and efficiently moved over the station concourse as each stage is completed. In addition, there are seven temporary access staircases installed across the station. The new glazing panes being installed are 50% lighter than the original glass, on completion the new roof will reduce loading on the existing structure and increase the resilience of the stations glazed roof for the long term.
