Originally developed at the University of Edinburgh School of Engineering, the technology enables sustainable microfiltration systems that improve the efficiency and scalability of bioprocessing industries. We are pleased to share that Rhizocore Technologies Ltd has secured a £1 million Defra grant to advance a fungi-based bio-filtration system designed to mitigate agricultural water pollution. In collaboration with The James Hutton Institute, Harper Adams University, and Cheshire Wildlife Trust, this initiative aims to deliver scalable, nature-based solutions for improving water quality. By leveraging native British fungi, our technology captures pollutants from agricultural runoff, reducing environmental impact while converting excess nutrients into organic fertilisers to support sustainable farming. 🔬 This project is backed by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Farming Innovation Programme and Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency supporting high-impact environmental solutions. 💧 As we implement this breakthrough, we welcome discussions with investors and industry leaders in the water sector to explore collaboration opportunities. New University of Edinburgh spinout, Concinnity Genetics, has raised £3 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round to produce gene control systems for advanced therapeutics. The fund-raise included Old College Capital (OCC) - the University of Edinburgh’s in-house venture investment fund. Dr Andrea Taylor, CEO of Edinburgh Innovations, said: “Engineering biology is a major strength of the University of Edinburgh, catalysing novel solutions across our three mission areas of future health and care, data and AI for good and climate and sustainability. “Sophisticated gene control systems have the potential to revolutionise advanced therapeutics, enabling new kinds of treatments that will impact future health. Excellent news for AlveoGene today with confirmation of our Rare Paediatric Disease Designation from the FDA for AVG-002 indicated in lethal neonatal surfactant deficiency SP-B. This sets us on the pathway to developing a first-and-best-in-class product for this unmet medical need and provide a lasting therapeutic solution enabled by our inhaled gene therapy platform, InGenuITy®. Once approved, we will also qualify for the award of a Priority Review Voucher, which recently have secured associated valuations in the $100-150m range. We are also making excellent progress with AVG-003 indicated in ABCA3 surfactant deficiency, and data in hand supports AVG-001 becoming the preferred future product for the treatment of AATD lung disease.
