  • A happy and prosperous new year to all our clients, partners and team! 2025 is set to be another successful year for the ground source heat pump industry, and we are ready. 2024 was a big step-change for our team in the GSHP sub-contracting drilling industry. We drove forward the scale of projects, invested in new machinery and accreditations, and grew our team. The headline figure from last year was '50 miles of piping for GSHP systems installed during 2024'. However, achieving that required a well-oiled machine, a team that knew what they were doing and worked extremely hard to meet client deadlines. Here are a few of our year’s highlights: - We underwent three significant industry audits for Citation Professional Solutions, MCS and Ground Source Heat Pump Association Drillers’ Audit - and passed them all! - We completed our first install of the new Shoebox NX from Kensa - Our new newsletter, Onsen - On the Ground, was successfully launched and has a growing number of monthly subscribers. - We drilled over 32 boreholes on a large-scale GSHP project for a Secondary School & Sixth Form College in the UK - Attended and participated in the Ground Source in Focus industry event hosted by the Ground Source Heat Pump Association (Genius Energy Lab (Ground Source Heat Pump System and Heat Network Designers) - it was great to see you there). - Purchased a new state-of-the-art mud processing unit, a key addition to our fleet of equipment. Thank you to all of our partners and clients who contributed to such a successful year. We’re excited about 2025, and we have a lot planned. As the momentum builds in the UK for GSHPs, and if you’re considering this future-forward technology as the heating and cooling source for your next project, get in touch with us: gareth@onsenenergy.com #GroundSourceHeatPump #BoreholeDrilling #DrillingRigs #HappyNewYear

  • We’ve been a little quiet on LinkedIn with project updates. For the past 3 months our team has been dedicated to a large commercial project in Central London. Gareth Berry— “I can’t thank the team's dedication enough for their hard work and consistent quality of work in delivering 13,000 metres of boreholes to support a large ground source heat pump installation. Once completed, we’d have drilled 76 boreholes to a depth of 240m. Here’s an image of the team drilling under floodlights and into the dark to keep the project on track (the rig stops early in the evening to minimise disruption to local residents). We’ll have more project updates soon. I’m a proud leader of this brilliant team, and of all it’s achieved in the last quarter of 2024.” #GSHP #GroudSourceHeatPumps #RenewableEnergyProject #BoreholeDrilling

  • Who is Onsen Energy? Onsen Energy was founded when the team - with a background in construction - saw the demand for ground source heating growing. We invested in a drilling rig and partnered with Kensa Group’s installer development team for support, training and MCS accreditation. “Our team at Onsen Energy has over a decade of experience in borehole solutions and heat pump installations. We’re passionate about renewable energy and proud to support leading UK consultants in the sector. One myth is that heat pumps can’t heat homes properly—this isn’t true! With the right design and installation, any home can benefit from ground source heating. There’s huge potential for ground source heat pumps in large projects with shared ground arrays. It could bring down costs and drive adoption across the UK." - Gareth Berry, MD of Onsen Energy For highly-qualified, professional and experienced borehole drilling services to bring this renewable energy source into your next project, reach out to Gareth and the team: gareth@onsenergy.com #RenewableEnergy #Boreholes #Sustainability #GroundSourceHeatPumps #BoreholeDrillers

  • We are often asked how deep our drilling rigs have to drill for ground source heat pump boreholes. The depth of a ground loop installation depends on various factors such as geological conditions, space available and loop installation method.   A horizontal GSHP is usually only between 1-2m, whereas vertical boreholes for a GSHP system are generally 50-300m - with the depth varying based on the factors above. Onsen Energy’s drilling specialists work with leading system design partners to calculate the perfect depth and number of boreholes required per project, which will deliver the optimum heating and cooling requirement and efficiency. • From a large-scale GSHP system installation for a UK Secondary School to supporting a pioneering development of net zero carbon homes in East Sussex, our work at Onsen Energy is making a big impact on sustainable heating solutions across the UK. Here's a look at two of our most recent projects: Net Zero Carbon Homes in Lewes, East Sussex We supported the installation of ground source heat pumps (GSHP) for 32 net zero carbon homes in Lewes, in collaboration with Boutique Modern Ltd. Ltd and Kensa Contracting for Raven Housing Trust. 15 boreholes on a shared ground array now provide renewable heating and hot water, resulting in major energy savings for residents. Sustainable GSHP Drilling Project for UK Secondary School & College Our team completed a large-scale GSHP installation for a UK Secondary School and Sixth-Form College four weeks ahead of schedule. From initial design consultation to implementation, our team drilled over 10,000m of boreholes (12+ miles of pipework!) with minimal site disruption. Our team has over a decade of experience in borehole drilling and specialises in vertically drilled borehole solutions and heat pump installations.
