2024 UK Challenge Team Spotlight - CGI 👀 #ukchallenge #instinctgym #corporateevents #challenge #run
Each year around 60,000 men leave prison and 48% will reoffend before the year is out. Why? Because when they apply for jobs they are met with a wall of mistrust. 75% of employers will not hire an ex offender. This needs to change otherwise, aside from the waste of human lives, reoffending will continue to cost the tax payer £18bn a year. Onwards & Upwards was created to do just that. Start businesses specifically to employ ex offenders. We are not a business with a purpose though. We are a purpose with a business. Our purpose is to break the cycle of reoffending, and our first business is XO Bikes. As with all of our businesses, XO Bikes will be sustainable, with the profits funding the charity to create more businesses, employing more ex offenders. We provide training on the inside, jobs on the outside and pastoral support on all sides. By creating trusted brands and respected businesses we believe we can destigmatise those with a custodial past, and change recruitment attitudes towards prison leavers. Not every offence should carry a life sentence.

We are proud to celebrate five years of a transformative partnership with Virgin Atlantic, a partnership that has served more than just coffee. Since the partnership began in 2019, Virgin Atlantic has helped drive our mission to support people experiencing homelessness through training and employment opportunities, while bringing ethically sourced, high-quality coffee to travellers across the Atlantic. With each cup of coffee sold on Virgin Atlantic flights, they have provided vital funding for our training and employment programs, accelerating our growth in the UK and beyond. In the UK, their contribution has funded 20 trainees through our programme, including Rob, who received vital services from the support team and was later referred to the Barista Training Programme and hasn’t looked back. He is now in full time employment and feeling positive about the future. “I was first directed towards Change Please when I needed the help of getting a new bank account. Michelle, my fairy godmother as I call her now, helped me with things like that, and then put me onto the Barista Training Programme. It was basically someone putting a hand on my shoulder at the time that I needed support, and directed me in the right direction. Working with Change Please pulled me back to I would say sanity – myself. It was the support I needed when everybody else was running away from me, when I was asking for help.” This partnership is just the beginning of a long-term collaboration between Virgin Atlantic and Change Please, with plans to expand the initiative and explore new ways of working together to drive social impact in 2025. We had an amazing opportunity to work with o3e last night at the intercontinetal hotel O2 to help the good people (1000+) from IFS build over 100 bikes for charities across the UK! o3e support companies by providing events that allow staff to use their giving back days in extremely meaningful ways. An amazing orgainsation helping wonderful causes nationwide. The lads from XO Bikes had a great time and a very big thank you to Peter Lindsay for asking us to be part of this! Also a shout to Sarah Smith for organising and encouraging the XO team to get involved! Onwards & Upwards
Brilliant to have you as one of our donantion partners! Thanks for all your support, looking forward to more collaboration in 2025.
At Bidvest Noonan, we’re proud to support XO Bikes and their incredible work. The bikes we’ve donated have helped train 50 prison leavers and ex-offenders this year, with an additional 22 trained in their Pentonville workshop. Many have gone on to secure employment through XO Bikes and their partners. XO Bikes ensures every bike makes a difference, donating to charities like The Bike Project and CFO hubs, where they provide vital support to communities. Even bikes beyond repair are repurposed for parts, ensuring nothing goes to waste. A big thank you to our colleagues and everyone involved for making this impact possible

Employment is proven to break the cycle of reoffending which cuts crime and means fewer victims. Today, we're taking nationwide action. Lord Timpson transformed lives by bringing businesses into prisons. Now, as Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, he's launching 11 new Employment Councils across England and Wales to take this proven approach further. These new Councils will: 🔷 drive regional employment strategies tailored to local needs 🔷 connect probation teams with major employers like The Co-op and COOK Trading Ltd 🔷 ensure continuous support from custody into the community Each Council will have a dedicated Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) representative, linking probation services to local Jobcentres and opening direct routes to employment.
