Our challenge-led and open approach to research is in our Open University DNA.
About us
Our challenge-led and open approach to research is in our Open University (OU) DNA. It underpins our mission and our latest research strategy, which centres on the Open Societal Challenges programme to address three crucial challenges facing people across the globe: Sustainability, Tackling Inequalities, and Living Well. We work with people from all walks of life, organisations, charities and policymakers on research that transforms lives. And we believe innovation starts from the ground up in close collaboration with the people living through real-world challenges. That’s where the Open Societal Challenges (OSC) Programme supports and enables those outside the OU to work with our researchers to address society’s most pressing issues. Some of our Challenges aim to combat the climate crisis while protecting people’s rights and improving living conditions now and in the future; others propose new models for living well, and many overlap across themes as they aim to redress inequalities across the world to bring about religious tolerance, gender safety and equality, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. By bringing people together, we build interdisciplinary and inclusive research that empowers communities in the UK and worldwide and gives them agency in driving positive societal change. This challenge-led and open approach to research is in our DNA. And it underpins our latest research strategy, which centres on the Open Societal Challenges programme to address three crucial challenges facing people across the globe.

YSS is extremely excited to announce that we have recently been awarded an Open Societal Challenges funding grant for our new research project exploring the psychological impact of online media exposure on children affected by familial crimes. The project, titled An Investigation into the Impact of Online Media Exposure of Familial Crimes on Children, is a collaborative effort between YSS and the Children’s Research Centre (CRC) at The Open University (OU). It aims to fill a significant gap in understanding how media coverage of family-related crimes affects young people, while also developing resources to help them navigate the emotional complexities that arise from such exposure. Through this grant, YSS and the OU are poised to make a lasting impact on the well-being of children and young people who are exposed to traumatic media coverage, helping them heal and thrive in the face of adversity. https://lnkd.in/eV-YMXqB

Telling Object Stories Through Digital Technologies Cultural heritage data holds a wealth of untold stories, but the way in which it is currently structured in collections management systems does not readily allow these ‘object itineraries’ to be surfaced. Our project used free online tools to annotate and visualise data about museum objects, with the aim of uncovering their ‘hidden histories’. In this post, we go back to the beginning and describe the motivations behind our OSC. Find out more in our latest blog 👇 https://lnkd.in/gt3EaDHa

A Turning Moment for Sustainable Livestock in the Amazon! Today, alongside UNDP and MIDAGRI, IMPERATIVE Peru S.A. participated in presenting the regional results of the first stage of updates to the National Livestock Strategy. The results from the Amazon regions of Ucayali and Huánuco reinforcing a growing shift toward sustainable and regenerative cattle farming. As I’ve traveled across the Amazon with MIDAGRI's Dirección General de Desarrollo Ganadero, one message has been loud and clear: the time to act is now! Farmers have seen the progress made in Madre de Dios, they are actively asking for interventions, and they want to be part of the solution. However, for real transformation, producers must have strengthened land title rights—this is essential to unlock private sector investment and ensure long-term sustainability. This urgency was echoed today by the Minister Angel Manuel Manero Campos in Huánuco, where he stated: "This is a key year to transform agriculture and livestock in the region. We need to work intensively to seize these opportunities and improve farmers' incomes." The alignment is clear—farmers are ready, and the government is signaling its commitment. However, today’s discussions also highlighted a key barrier: Peru’s institutions must streamline bureaucracy, coordinate more effectively, and build strong partnerships to provide farmers with the interventions they desperately need. A huge thank you to MIDAGRI, UNDP, the Mesa Técnica Ganadera representatives from Huánuco and Ucayali, and all involved institutions for their dedication. Special recognition to Ministerio de Desarrollo Agrario y Riego for their commitment and vision to this climate critical work, the Director of the Direccion General de Desarollo Ganadero Ing Victor Alberto Rodriguez Bustamante, IMPERATIVE Peru S.A.for its commitment to bringing climate action to Amazonian farmers and to the The Open University for recognising the valuable work of the AGRAP - Alianza por la Ganaderia Regenerativa en la Amazonia Peruana as part of the Open Societal Challenges It’s time for climate action, Amazonia #AcClimaAmazonia !! #RegenerativeAgriculture #ClimateAction #Amazonia #SustainableLivestock #Ucayali #Huánuco #ImperativePeru #GanaderíaSostenible #LandRights #PrivateInvestment
