We support families living in the East of England to feel safe and in control of their own wellbeing

About us

Ormiston Families exists today because of one family's tragedy. A young woman, Fiona Ormiston Murray, died whilst on her honeymoon. Fiona loved children and it was no secret that she was excited about starting her own family. Her family, devastated by their loss, wanted to do something to honour her memory. They created a charitable trust, devoted to helping children and families in need. That trust is now known as Ormiston Families. We work with families across the East of England who, for various reasons, need guidance to see a brighter future. By building resilience, we support them to feel safe and in control of their own wellbeing.

When someone is sent to prison, it’s not just their life that changes – their family’s world is turned upside down too. For years, I’ve seen how the ripple effects of imprisonment can impact children, partners, and loved ones. Families often face stigma, isolation, financial strain, and emotional turmoil, all while trying to navigate an incredibly complex system. But here’s the thing – these families are often forgotten in the conversation about justice and reform. And yet, they’re central to creating a more stable society and preventing cycles of reoffending. That’s why I’m proud to be supporting the Ormiston Families Breaking Barriers Conference on 26th February. This isn’t just another event. It’s a place where prison reform campaigners, private sector innovators, academics, and people like you and me come together to explore real solutions for the families left behind. As an employer, educator, policymaker, or community leader, you have the power to make a difference. This conference is a chance to: ✔️ Understand how the prison crisis affects families and communities – and how that might even impact your workforce or business. ✔️ Learn from thought leaders who are driving change. ✔️ Be part of a movement that’s creating brighter futures for families in need. 💚 Together, we’re raising funds for the Breaking Barriers Winter Appeal, helping Ormiston Families continue their vital work. 👉 I’d love for you to join us. Get your tickets here: https://lnkd.in/eGx6wGsF This is more than a conversation – it’s a call to action. Let’s work together to ensure all families have brighter futures.

  • Today we are sharing another of our Breaking Barriers Winter Appeal Artwork Exhibition pieces, with today's piece kindly sponsored by AT&A Andrew Thompson & Associates. 🎨   All the artworks are produced by children who work with our Breaking Barriers service. Children working with the service have been affected by the imprisonment of a loved one and they have made these pieces to share their feelings. 🖌️   Many of the children we work with experience trauma when a loved one goes to prison. We try and help them find ways to reduce anxiety around prison, support emotional wellbeing and school attendance.   Art can be a powerful way for children to express unspoken feelings and our practitioners often use creative activities to give them the space to share. 💚 Luna, aged 7, said of her piece 'Blue': "Blue is the colour I feel when I’m sad. Sometimes I’m angry but mostly sad that my Daddy isn’t here."   We will continue sharing 12 pieces of art over the coming weeks and they will go on display at our Breaking Barriers Conference at The Hold in Ipswich on February 26. More information on the conference can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eGx6wGsF

It’s okay to feel lots of feelings, good or bad, when you’re going through rough times."   We will be sharing 12 pieces of art over the coming weeks and they will go on display at our Breaking Barriers Conference at The Hold in Ipswich on February 26. • Overcrowding, violence, drugs - the crisis in prisons is big news. But while debate centres on victims, prisoners and prison staff, the families of someone sent to prison often remain forgotten. At our Breaking Barriers Conference on 26th February, we're bringing together experts including prison reform campaigners, private sector innovators and academics to share expertise and find solutions to an endemic issue. If you are an employer, educator, influence social policy, or provide support directly to families or prisoners, this is a must-attend event, raising money for our Breaking Barriers Winter Appeal. 💚 Buy your tickets today: https://lnkd.in/eGx6wGsF

  • 190,000 children in England and Wales will be spending this winter with a loved one in prison. These could be children living down your street or in your child's classroom. Help us to help them this winter by donating to our Breaking Barriers Winter Appeal, funding the service that supports these children during one of the most difficult times of their lives. 💚 Donate today: https://lnkd.in/eQEQYdXR
