"How do you promote language justice?" Day Heisinger-Nixon began our lunchtime discussion with the above question, inspired by the article "How to Build Language Justice" by Antena Aire. We brainstormed what language justice really means, how we can promote it, and how we, as individuals, can advocate for everyone's right to communicate in their preferred language. Meaningful conversations and learning happen when people communicate in a language they all understand. This got us thinking about what language justice looks like in our work and daily lives. Guess who graced us with their wisdom at Overseas Interpreting? Two retired lecturers from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Keuka College: Karen Christie and Dorothy Wilkins. We hosted an outdoor get-together where these knowledgeable lecturers shared their years of teaching stories which we can use to upgrade our work in one way or another. And here is the interesting part... one of the lecturers, Dorothy Wilkins, taught the founder of Overseas Interpreting, Oliver Pouliot at RIT. It is truly a small world. A huge thank you to them for the lessons, laughs, and memorable experiences shared. Here’s to learning from the best!
